True. But it doesn't mean that people today would not do the same things if asked. I remember the days of "Get up there or go home and we'll find somebody else that will"
Up until recent years, a certain amount of deaths were figured into each project and the contractors would buy insurance based on the estimated payout on the estimated number of fatalities, dismemberments, paralysis, etc.

Then someone got the idea just to make work safer. Safety goes a bit overboard sometimes but I think it's a better system, overall.

Similar to my experience from the shore of the Rouge River when I was about six years old. The sound of the dorsal fin from a very large carp breaking the surface about 15 feet way was scored into my brain for life like a branding iron. Nothing else could live in that river at the time (heavily polluted) but for some reason it was going at a good speed just beneath the surface.
