Used to travel that road quite a bit back in the 90's. Traveled it several times on a day that another plane went down in almost the exact same spot. That one killed everyone on board.

The effectiveness of the new VT fused shells exploding in mid-air, on exposed personnel, caused a minor mutiny when German soldiers started refusing orders to move out of their bunkers during an artillery attack. U.S. General George S. Patton said that the introduction of the proximity fuze required a full revision of the tactics of land warfare.[37]

The aerial part of the battle was nicknamed the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot by American aviators for the severely disproportional loss ratio inflicted upon Japanese aircraft by American pilots and anti-aircraft gunners.[4] During a debriefing after the first two air battles a pilot from USS Lexington remarked "Why, hell, it was just like an old-time turkey shoot down home!"[5] The outcome is generally attributed to American improvements in training, tactics, technology (including the top-secret anti-aircraft proximity fuze), and ship and aircraft design.[N 1][N 2]

The proximity fuze is one of the great unsung 'secret wepaons' of WWII. It was Eisenhower who demanded he be allowed to use the fuzes and they were instrumental to the Allied victory in the Battle of the Bulge.

Bad weather had been a critical component of the German plan and they felt relatively safe from timed fire because they thought low visibility would prevent accurate observation, preventing accurate timer settings. The VT fuse didn't need anything but to be fired into the general area and it decimated German divisions caught in the open.

Coincidence rangefinder

Quote:

A coincidence rangefinder (stereoscopic, parallax, or split-image rangefinder) is a type of rangefinder that uses mechanical and optical principles to allow an operator to determine the distance to a visible object.

The device consists of a long tube, with two lenses facing forwards at each end, and an operator eyepiece in the center. Two prism wedges which, when aligned result in no deviation of the light, are inserted into the light path of one of the two lenses. By rotating the prisms in opposite directions using a differential gear, a degree of horizontal displacement of the image can be achieved.

That dazzle did indeed work along these lines is suggested by the testimony of a U-boat captain:[1]

It was not until she was within half a mile that I could make out she was one ship [not several] steering a course at right angles, crossing from starboard to port. The dark painted stripes on her after part made her stern appear her bow, and a broad cut of green paint amidships looks like a patch of water. The weather was bright and visibility good; this was the best camouflage I have ever seen.[1]
