Our homes don’t need formal spaces

For a recent study, UCLA-affiliated researchers in fields ranging from anthropology to sociology used cameras to record in great detail how 32 dual-income families living in the Los Angeles area used their homes. Their findings link real data to something about which I have been yelling into the void for years: Nobody is actually using their formal living and dining rooms. Families actually spend most of their time in the kitchen and the informal living room or den.

Instead of a study all they had to do was read some old books to understand this.

It is designed so you can have guests without needing to clean the whole house up from living to visiting condition in advance.

The purpose is not to live in those rooms, but rather to have them ready for use when needed. Living in them defeats that purpose.

Parlors and un-used rooms were/are important if you have unexpected guests.

Instead of a study of use they could have read up on the reason.

In an era of cell phones.........be over in 15 minutes, entering through so-called service entries and garages even for first time guests, the parlor or living room is antiquated in my opinion.

Also notice the study was of both household members working. The traditional father working with a mom at home all day greeting the Fuller Brush man or having the neighbor over for coffee, or even escaping the chaos of children playing in the family room on the other side of the house was not a factor.

No one needs huge houses with lots of empty rooms, but most of us still want them.

The big house with a dining room and living room is like driving a full sized Chevy Suburban all year for those two weeks of summer vacation where you load up all the family and tow a trailer or boat. Nice if you can afford it, but you could have rented something for those two weeks.

Not really, it is more like having a Jaguar for special occasions and a mini-van for your day to day driving with kids.

Like I said, it has a purpose, and that purpose is not be day to day lived in but for special occasions. It shouldn't take a study to see that, all it takes is the reason it is there in the first place.

It shouldn't take a study to find out that a room for special occasions primarily gets used for special occasions.

I mean, it is like holding a study on carrot harvesting machines to find they only get used for the part of the year when carrots are harvested.
