He was lucky. IIRC, one of the findings of the investigation was that the 1981 Cadillac Eldorado was the only year where there was a steel plate under the seat. This deflected the blast away from him.

That was our going out ride.
it was nice but the little nagging fall-apart stuff was annoying.
