Luge!?!?!?

Ok...now I think Luge is cool, but on a Sunday night after everyone has gone to sleep and I get the remote, I want to see Formula 1 Decade, or a rerun of an ALMS race, or maybe WRC reruns. So what do I find on Speed? LUGE?

It's been running all night long! Hmmm... I did enjoy the SCCA Runoff Marathorn couple days ago though.

Did anyone here catch the kart races they showed earlier in the day? Pretty awesome!

TiVo

Remember, the American luge team has support from Geoff Bodine who is NASCAR who owns Speed.

Hackl was racing last night. I think the moderators need to apologize ;)

Was he really??!! That's hilarious.

Then, of course, there's this. And as an avid skier and former instructor I can only say, <b><i>"where the hell is the brake on that thing!?"</i></b>

Hoot! I know where one of those ski-bobs is...it's owner never used it. Probably because he has common sense? This guy a total collector...never sells anything. But if it's LUGE you like? Try driving in the Willamette Valley of Oregon tonight. It snowed last night, then got above freezing during the day, now below freezing. Has to be lots of black ice out there, especially on secondary roads. The body shop owners are going to have a biz boom!

I street luge, talk about an adrenaline rush doing 45-50 mph 2.5 inches off the ground. Ice luge seems a little fast...

ronin 12-29-2003 10:27 PM

dang, too bad you're in KY. I always wanted to try that but I don't know anyone here that I could talk to about the sport

I saw it on TV and thought it looked cool, so I started researching it online and found dimensions to build a wooden luge (you can't use it in competition but it was good to start with) so I got some 2x4s, plywood, over-size skateboard wheels and trucks, good bearings and put it together. Layed down and threw myself down a hill...

wow. any thoughts on a first site? things are pretty populated here. I figured I'd do it in the company of others with experience, that they may head me off at the pass lest I unwittingly attempt to do something really stupid. but I guess I could go it alone :D

I too watched a bit of the luge on SPEED the other nite.
True, not "Victory By Design", but better than NASTYCAR reruns.

A first site...mine was in my neighborhood, almost completely flat, I could only get maybe 8mph, it was enough to learn how to turn and make sure I got the luge built right (it would go in a straight line easily) Then I kept moving up to slightly bigger hills, all of them have been in neighborhoods, in parts where there is NO traffic. Traffic is your enemy, once you decide you want to stop it could take hundreds of feet... Also I'd try to stay on straigt roads to start, turns can get ugly if you don't know how to turn right, I almost flipped off to the side once in a turn, my arm bled alot...

This is the site I found, I made the "sportin' wood luge"

cool, I'll have a looksee. there are a few places that I might try. it's pretty hilly around here but I can come up with something. sportin' wood looks like a good first candidate! Dave Rogers' board looks damned good too

Why does this remind me of self-dentistry? :D

pearldrum 12-31-2003 11:17 PM

That third one was built from metal, and those get really expensive, the last one he has pictured is like around $1700 I think...
