Bump....thanks to all for the great shots. Z-man, I'll forgive you, lack of local knowledge. But in the future do NOT get on or near logs that are at surf's edge. "Sneaker" waves roll them over people all too often here in the Northwest...very dangerous. (edit) Whoops, my goof...I was referring to the shot by Ronin of Seattle location. Jeeze...a local should know better! Nice shot tho...pretty lady, great scenery.

(gulp) the offense may have been yours...the pretty lady sitting on a log near surf's edge. Now imagine a sneaker (big) wave rolling in, hitting that log, shoving it a bit more towards shore, your lady knocked backwards off the log, the log rolling over her...
Not a nice thing to think about, but it happens...all too often.

nope, peedub. ;) I was high and dry. there were no other logs around me and I was standing on dry ground. the wave that you see there was the result of a crossover (riptide) that pushed the remainder of the original wave up to the log. they were very easy to see and predict as the water is very shallow there. I had been waiting for that one for some time as they were cycling at a rate of one about every seven or so minutes on the incoming tide. I was watching that one approach over my shoulder. the log was also planted very well. don't worry, I don't take chances on silly things. I've been on those beaches for years and know where not to venture. hell, I won't even go on most of the log jams on dry ground as there are too many loose ones lurking within and can give way at any time. thanks for looking out though. there are lots of people that don't know this and get seriously hurt

Just dawned on me, pic probably taken on the sound, not a beach with the mighty Pacific itself to the pretty lady's left? Still, my advice is to always keep your eye on the surf...don't turn your back on it. Down here in Oregon, a woman nearly drowned when watching storm surf...and she was in a roadside park parking lot! Sneaker wave came in, washed her under a car, preventing rescuers from getting to her for quite some time. The ocean is beautiful, but guys...be careful out there, okay?

I've seen the incoming tide on a few NW coastal areas. That driftwood she's on is a tooth pick compared to the big stuff. The NW has some big wood. And the whole package is littered to the horizon when looking north or south.
Anyway.. the big stuff that's down at the edge at low tide gets tossed around as the tide comes in. and it's tourist dangerous.

you were right the first time. the beach we were on is on the Pacific up by Kalaloch. you don't get surf like that on the Sound ;) (check upper left on the horizon) trust me when I say that the log was firmly anchored. it was one that didn't make it to the jam out of the picture on the right. (the big stuff that RoninLB is talking about) also, the water stopped just shy of actually undercutting the log. once the tide started to surround the log, we were long gone

I definitely agree with you that there are many people doing foolish things on the beach. you see it every day. I did see some people tempting fate by dancing on some seriosly loose logs that could have easily taken a leg had either of them slipped, not to mention risking riptides as the tide was returning. you can see them at the upper right where the water already reaches the logs :rolleyes:

I found this couple hundred meters from my new house, there are fish in there and my lot reaches this place :) (This was a surprise for me)
