The neighborhood shuts off the streetlights for Xmas eve. Out go the little lunchbags of sand and candles. We moved in 18 mo ago and, after graciously giving us a pie and a bottle of wine, the neighbors started in with the "Let's talk about Christmas Eve..."

They're called Luminarias down in Albuquerque... Farolitos, by some, in Santa Fe... and I guess, Los Alamos...

Christmas in NM and all the people trying to copy the tradition, please use the terms correct terms that have been used in SFNM for centuries...

candle-lit paper bags are called farolitos, and the pitchwood bonfires are known as luminarias .
