Believe it or not, somebody has created a web site to track the pump prices for regular in the L.A. area:

In my experience, gas prices in and around Chicago are the highest in the nation. At least this was the case in 1999, might've changed since then, but the difference at that time was almost 30 cents.

You can check gas prices here:
http://www.gaspricewatch.com/

They list the highest at $2.59 in Hawaii and the lowest at $1.79 in Wyoming.

edit: After posting this I immediately went on their site and found higher prices. I'm not sure when/how they update the highest and lowest prices on their front page.

It is $2.63 for premium in my neighborhood - I can't even put a full tank of gas in the Porsche anymore because I am not about to pay $55 to fill a 21 gallon tank.

$2.51/gal for Union76 91 octane this morning. $50 to fill my 911!

Our next car is definitely going to be a hybrid. There's virtually no downside to them, except the waiting list. My wife is spending over $200/month on gas to shuttle the kids around - cutting that to $60 would be very nice.

One station in L.A. was reported to be over $4/gallon for full serve 91 octane. But I never know how much to trust the local radio news.

Because of the last 100 years of technological revolution, and especially the last 50, we'll definitly have our mark in the history books.
I saw this: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net It's a wild concept that hopefully won't affect this generation, but something to think about.

LA Gas prices ... don't remind me.

New job is in Orange county ( fullerton) and I'll be driving all over OC and LA. Mainly in LA ( downtown ). Luckily no Valley.
And here's the kicker... I live in San Diego....

$500 a month for gas. 200 - 300 miles a day.

Forget the hybrid - go find a used VW TDI (new ones not sold in Cali) and get 50+ mpg in a descent sized car that has a lot of go.

Locally
87 octane $1.959
89 octane $2.059
93 octane $2.159

Diesel $1.639

Most hybrids claim 45+ mpg but rarely see it. I have a 2000 TDI with a lifetime (117K miles) mpg of 51 mpg

As far as emissions go they are cleaner than 99% of gas engine out there except in one area and that is NOx. When you compared emissions created per mile driven the Diesel engine is cleaner than 99% of the cars on the road.

So I have owned my car for ~ 57 months and if I say I have consumed ~ 2294 gallons of diesel that means I have spent $3,900 dollars or about $69 a month.

And prices are supposedly going higher because of the Saudi hostage incident. (???)

Now the word is that OPEC will do what it can to insure supply. Not to try and lower cost. This is a squeeze. Is this the hurdle to get and keep prices over $2.00? Remember when it was a big deal for prices to go past a buck?

Trivia: The U.S. consumes 385 million gallons of gasoline each day. For every penny that the price of gas increases, 1.3 billion dolars is taken out of the rest of the economy.
