Randy, I'd agree that the Constitution is worthy of discussion, but the question that the Republican Party seems determined to push to a vote is whether the Constitution should continue to read as it does. At least that is my understanding. The conservatives want to narrow the definition of "marriage" to include only a union between a man and a woman. It's part of the whole conservative "freedom" movement thing. I'm sure you've seen the bumper stickers.
