Sox vs. Yanks; the rivalry lives

Anyone else see these two games over the past two days? Instant classics. Both games were decided by HRs in the 9th inning, the team that lost each game lost by only one run. The scores went back and forth in both games.

It doesn't really matter that the Yankees are 8 games ahead of the Sox in the East... this is what everyone expected. The Sox haven't been playing well lately, but they are at the top of the Wild Card race.

Now, for years they have said that the rivalry is in the head of the fans, that the players don't feel any real anamosity toward each other. Well, that may have been the case in the late 1990s and even as recently as 2002, but there seems to be some serious bad blood between key players (namely the "Dirt Dogs" - Varitek, Nixon, and Millar on the Sox),and things got pretty ugly tonight.

After Arroyo beaned A-Rod in the 3rd, A-Rod was seen saying "yo, f*ck you, f*ck you" to the pitcher. Varitek said something like, "you don't say that to my pitcher" and some more words were exchanged. Then A-rod said, "okay, man, let's go!" and Varitek decked the smug little prick. Brings back memories of Fisk and Lee vs. Munson and Pinella in 1976.

6 players were eventually ejected, the Yankees were up by 2 in the bottom of th 9th... until Mueller hit a walk-off shot to win it for the Sox

Just like last year, these are two of the best matchups in MLB!

Superb game. Too bad it's blacked out like every other damn Sox game out here. The only way to get it would be to spend like $200 for the season pass on DirecTV (can you say "GOD! HAVE THE COURTESY TO AT LEAST USE A LITTLE LUBE!")?

Yea, A-Rod who probably weighs in at about 220 is going to go after Arroyo who's probably about 170 - what a tough guy. Good for Varitek. I'd like to have seen Ortiz go at it with A-Rod. Ortiz would've ripped his head off and $hit down his neck.

At least there's life in the hometown. . .

Fortunately for us transplanted fans, comcast here in Philly shows all the nesn games on HDTV...I can't wait, we have tickets for the late september series in NY.

That surely was a huge win tonight. And yes, Nomar's bettah...

That catcher is a pussy - calling someone out when you wear a mask..

Sometimes when ass needs to be kicked, you don't have time to undress.

You're probably right.. baseball fights are lame anyway.. always a bench clearer.. you never just get to see two guys work out their differences without interference.. I sure hope there's a hockey season next year! ;)

make that 8-5 vs the yanks this year....

according to the hartford courant, when A-Rod was saying "f*ck you" to Arroyo, Varitek said something like "why don't you just go to first base," and then A-Rod said "okay, big boy, let's go." Varitek took the bait.

So the "catcher" didn't really call him out...

Final score tonight, Red Sox 9, Yankees 6. Pedro goes for the Sox tomorrow vs. Baltimore.

i visited Boston a few weeks ago and we walked around Fenway after a Phillies game. It's definately a happnin place, Lansdown Street and all. I can see why Boston fans are as Rabid as they are. The whole city struts after a win.

I'm rooting for them to make a run at the Yanks and make a race of it.

it just warms my heart to read this thread... home away from home

Last night's game was awesome. Aside from Timlin CHOKING AND GIVING UP FOUR F*CKING RUNS ON HIS FOURTH PITCH!!!

But at least they still won. GOD they need some bullpen though.

yes.... and dies after a loss.

The Matsui Grand Slam off Timlin really had me worried. A 3-run deficit is NOTHING for the Yankees, and Foulke really hasn't been that sharp lately. He got it done, though.

Classic series.
