winter tires...

Now that I work in an area where it snows in the Winter, and has lots of ice, does anyone have any recomendations for Winter tires? Should I go studded or studless, like the new Blizarks from Bridgestone?

The car they will be going on is a 2001 VW Passat.

TIA

I run Blizzaks on the iX during the winter, and they're f'ing awesome. You want narrow tires in the snow, remember.

In my area, studded tires are illegal. But, the Blizzak snow tires are exceptional. No need for studs with these tires. Other manufacturers also have good winter specific tires. Your Passat will transform into a snowmobile with proper winter tires.

Tailor your tires to the conditions. If you are in an area with lots of wet ice, the studs could be an advantage. Blizzaks or Michelin Arctic Alpines would be better if you have more snow and consistantly cold temps. I ran the Alpines for three winters on a '93 Passat TD and hadn't had as much fun since the days I had a Quattro, the tires were that good.
