Very cool, Ed. This reminds me of a show that was running years ago on Discovery or one of those kinds of channels. This very footage may even have been used in the show. They had given the large male lion a really cool name in the local dialect that translated essentially as "he who greets with fire". The gist of it was the hyenas showed up every time his pride made a kill, as is often the case. The hyenas would harass the lionesses until "he who greets with fire" came along and kicked some serious hyena a$$. This is a scenario that plays out day after day with these fellows. As a hard core hunter and one who is absolutely in awe of these animals, I have to thank you for posting this. It made my day.

that is bits of a documentary on the struggles between the lion pride and that group of hyenas. one of the very best wild life docs i have ever seen. i have watched it 4 or 5 times, i even will run accross it half way through and watch bits of it. great narration to it in its whole state too. that scene were the big male gets the matriarch hyena is the final close to the show. by the end you are REALLY pulling for the lion.

I wondered the same thing; and it may be that the top-tier predator lions earn their sustenance and kill what they eat ... the hyena then comes in with a pack of toughs to "steal" from the lion.

It's property rights in the animal kingdom -- I killed it, it's mine, and violations of those rights disturb something basic. It's not "injustice" per se, but it is a law of the jungle, and the hyenas "know" it.

Yeah, but who's to say what's right in the animal kingdom? I mean some animals just evolved in the scavenging role so it's not really their fault. It would be like blaming carnivores for eating meat. BTW I still root for the lion, that video rocks quite hard.

This is an example of nature, it's not right, it's not wrong, it just "is"!

Yargk -- I'm not saying it's "right" in any moral sense; that'd be a category error. That's why I put the words "steal" "injustice" and "know" in quotes. Scavengers certainly have a role to play in the Big Picture.

However, in considering the q Moses raised, it occurs to me that there are notions of property in the Animal Kingdom, whether it's "turf" or a den or lair -- or a killed animal, animals have a rudimentary concept of property.

Again, Moses' q was why do we (humans) root for the lion almost instinctively. Well, we're not scavengers (by and large...) and as a species tend to kill what we eat and view property rights from a position more sympathetic to the lions.

If we, as a species, better identified with antelope, this would be a whole different conversation, no? :D It just "is", I agree, but we're going to view the sit. from our own Kantian perspective, and tend to anthropomorphize the animals one way or another -- I was attempting to recognize the lens through which we view this sort of thing and provide to it some definition; no "right" or "wrong".

First of all, I don't support the lion. In fact, during "The Lion King" I was in full support of the hyenas (they had the best voices - Cheech Marin and Whoppi Goldberg). And, as you recall, they got their "just desserts" in the end as they killed and ate the Richard III type "Scar" character.

Yes, this is a cartoon. But that last scene when the hyenas kill the lion has truth to it as hyenas have recently been found to be hunters as well as scavengers. Just like domesticated dogs.

Well, in keeping with this forums track record... I want to be the first to say this video is wrong and is George W. Bush's fault. We should have done more to aid the hyenas. Furthermore, I'm sure HallyBurton and other evil corporations are behind it all.

No Leland from the video it was clear that the Lions are conservative and the Hyenas are liberal, the male Lion needs to be punished for attacking those helpless hyenas who attacked his "wife". Of GWB is largely to blame isn't everything his fault? LMAO :D
