Audi S4 owners, please read!
Looking to buy a 2000 S4 with 81k miles. I have heard some horror stories of Audi's from this period having some electrical gremlins. Can anyone that owns one comment or share their experiences? Thanks!

I'm a tech, VW and Audi factory trained. I don't know of anything in particular that is a common 'gremlin'

Haven't heard of any electrical problems. But it is very expensive to replace the turbos, and with 81k miles a blown turbo is certainly something you should be prepared for.
We have an aftermarket warrenty on our '01. Last edited by RallyJon; 02-02-2005 at 02:03 PM.. |

There are some rumors floating around regarding wiring harnesses that degrade too quickly. Like I said, these are rumors and I have not had any issues with my 2000 S4 w/49k miles.

My A4 had a few relays go bad at 45,000 miles becaues they got wet. Poor seal from the factory, otherwise great car.

I have learned so much at audiworld.com forums it's incredible. It has saved me tons of $$$ even working on my 99 a6 wagon. Great site.

quite a few of the '00 turbos imploded. Not cheap as indicated above. Some owners tried to get AoA to do a recall/warranty deal.

I had an 2001 s4, I bought it with 5k miles and sold it at 45K. Never had a problem. It was one of the best cars I have ever had. Get the station wagon (avant).

The only turbo failures that I've seen is where the owners have not maintained the car properly regarding oil changes and or where it had an aftermarket chip running the turbo at capacity constantly.
The other problem is that the level sensor for the coolant bottle will 'wick-up' coolant up into the wire harness, and if not discovered, will travel all the way into the ECM, TCM, and body control modules. I've replaced two complete wire harnesses and several computers.
