I never understood this stuff, is there some gazillionare behind these projects who's always up for a new way to burn money? Or do they actually attempt to turn a profit via sponsors/advertising? I got nuthin.

I think these things are more hobby than anything. Sponsorship pays (some of) the bills. The hope being that they actually set a new record and make a bunch of money at the end in endorsements. That's my guess.

I'll venture that without horizontal stabilizers the cockpit glass will flip up the front end or the venturi will suck it into the ground.
Are those guys related to the knuckleheads that attached a soild rocket to the top of a car, once?
