Looking for Walrus on Highway 1 in California

A few years ago the wife and myself were driving on Highway 1 up north, and ran into a rocky beach that these huge Walrus were on.

Anyone know where we might be able to find these guys again. We are going to be in Monterey in a few weeks, and thought our daughter might enjoy.

Do the monterey bay aquarium. After that, you probably will have seen enough of the wildlife :)

The ones on the lawn? I think those are elephant seals.

Pier 39 in San Francisco has a combination of seals and walruses out at the end of the pier.

actually it may have been the elephant seals you saw. they gather right about this time of year at ano nuevo state beach south of san francisco about 40 miles. i went the place as a kid for a field trip.

for those that don't get the "mills college" blast, that is an all "women's" college. very bullish around there, and i am not talking elephant seal males when i say bullish....

in fact the vagina monologue "craze" was started there. you know the one where chicks do monologues speaking as their hairy place would if it could?

i am a bit of a dr. doolittle when it comes to vaginas, i talk to them and whistle back. well its really more like a humming reply

k911sc,

Thanks, I will check on the map as see if that was the place.

Yes, it's elephant seals. And if you drive up Highway One, you'll see the crowds just North of San Luis Obispo and San Simeon. Ano Neuvo has them, too, But that's further North.

The beach is Piedras Blancas

It is an amazing sight, I agree!

Ano Nuevo is the best place to view elephant seals. Go there, worth the trip. Call first, you may need reservations for a guided tour.

BTW, I think you need a few pointers on identifying marine mammals. Their mating call is handy. For the walrus, listen for a distinct "koo-koo koo-choo:. ;)
