chevy ignition

HI,
Have a chevy 305 marine engine with a distributor that still has points, am looking for advice on converting it to pointless, as well as a hotter ignition system.............thanks

HEI. Available anywhere.. Check Summitracing.com Make sure to mention it's a marine engine - otherwise you'll be firing backwards.

All you need to do is get rid of the ballast resistor and rest is drop in.

Same as any points-based system. Crane, MSD or Pertronix.

For ignition boxes, there are too numerous choices. The above brands have several offerings.

We did this to a pair of Chevy/VolvoPentas some years back; as I recall we used Mallory distributors from Summit.

The units were completely self-contained (optical??), so it was a matter or swapping them in and hooking up a couple of wires and timing the beasts. These units also used the standard-type plug/coil wires that the points distributor used. Gawd I remember that project, the boat wasn't even a year old and would eat points every other month; after the swap life was trouble free.

See if you can get yourself an old Mercury Thunderbolt IV ignition, they are awsome and pretty cheap.
