Finally saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
OK, I know I know. But this is just one that always slipped through the cracks. You know that one movie that you've almost avoided waiting for that perfect time? Well that was last night till 2:00 A.M.
Anyway, is that what all the fuss was about? That movie was actually pretty bad. I mean it had its moments, but not even close to the comedy found in brat pack movies of the era. I suspect the fact that it portrayed innocent looking HS sophomore girls as sex hungry was a big hit with teens And drug references are always a hit with the Cali crowd, but that was all I saw.Anyway, I was disappointed.

You dont realize, it has been copied so many times, you have seen it all before.
Finally got the GF to watch "State of Grace" with Sean Penn - what was cutting edge, as been copied so many times as not to be so original.. Still a good movie though.. Besides, your getting older. It was fun when it first came out. You are forgetting what High School was like... |

A lot of that movie's appeal/impact was its context, and obviously the world has changed since Jeff Spicoli.
I don't rate it as a favorite of mine, but I enjoy it, and it's got some absolutely classic lines. JP

Perhaps I overstated my disappointment. I laughed a few times
![]() I do imagine that kids that work in malls/fast food must certainly associate with the situation humor about that. Maybe I expected too much? I mean I was really looking forward to watching this so many years later without ever having seen it. Interesting little experiment at the least.

Perhaps it is the age at which you watched it?

It's possible, I mean even back then I would have been a few years too young to relate.
I also cannot relate to the drug culture humor which I think is the main problem. Pot use was not widespread in my H.S., so I'm sure that stuff is lost on me.

My poor wife grew up in NY and UT and never went to Disneyland as a kid. Me growing up in Cali I went there alot thus DL has a lot of special memories for me. About 10 years ago I take her and she was like "what's the big deal?" We are regular California season pass holders and our kids love DL.
Fast times is a classic but if you wait too long you'll outgrow it. My HS experience was very very much like the movie - except I didn't have sex starved girls after me. "Are you in my class?" "I am today!"

That movie was written by a guy who went to Mission Bay HS (San Diego). If you grew up in SoCal during that era, the movies is FULL of funny bits that people who didn't live it wouldn't get.
Sorry...you're out in the cold on this one

Being in Michigan, Joel's probably used to being out in the cold.

![]() Now the "American Pie" movies were written by a guy from my town. DogDays(the hangout) is actually a little dog joint named YesterDog here in Grand Rapids(still there and doing well). The Beach scenes are all about Lake Michigan in Grand Haven. So yea Todd I know what you mean

Mike -- his face (and Spicoli's) when he sees the car -- awesome!!
So, Joel, what's next on your list of classics to see for the first time? Rocky? Jaws? Star Wars? I hear ET is OK.... JP

Just a weird deal I guess.I watch alot of old movies late at night, it's simply amazing that I missed this. I mean I'll admit to watching Mystic Pizza by myself at 3:00 A.M. How sad is that?

You missed your chance to appreciate that movie for what it is a long time ago. Man - It's fantastic! But you had to see it when you were the same age as the characters to really appreciate it.

I'm w/ Mikester. I can't imagine someone in their mid-30s only now watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off for the first time and finding it that funny; whereas back then it was iconic immediately.
Mystic Pizza, eh? Look, Joel, these boards are a lot of things, but a 12-step program is not one of them. For the sake of your reputation and, by association, the reputations of all conservatives hereon, keep such revelations to yourself in the future, k? ![]() JP
