So I decided to keep the Bimmer

I decided to keep the 318i I bought. I want to use it for DE/ AutoX. So I'm starting with the brakes. Anyone have any suggestions for caliper/rotors? Something less expensive than Brembos.

I know there is a BMW forum but I like you guys more.SmileWavy

Don't bother with cross drilled.. They will crack..

Zimmermans or Ate's will work just fine.. Try to get some decent pads as well. I think Porterfield makes some AX pads for this car...

Keep the stock rotors? The look small and feeble.

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-09-2005 08:43 AM

You are unfortunatley limited in what is actually available for the car...

How about an E30->E36 conversion? Drop in an S52 engine, E36 brakes, yum!

THE best rotors for the money are BALO rotors. They are German made and go through an intense QA process. The company also has it's own in-house foundry to control quality. They're also the least expensive.

I've used them on two cars, including a 740IL and never had an issue. Other rotors have a tendency to warp on the 740.

Im think about dropping in a 4.4L V8 of maybe a LS1 motor. They sell kits to do both.:D

BlueSkyJaunte 06-09-2005 09:34 AM

Isn't there a 318 supercharger kit out there?

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-09-2005 09:35 AM

I agree on the Balo's... good rotors....

Thats what i have on my 325is

Sorry to hijack, but do you guys know why a BMW car is a "Bimmer" and BMW motorcycle is a "Beemer". I've heard this a couple of places and it's driving me nuts. Why this bizarre distinction????

RickM 06-09-2005 11:51 AM

It was origianlly used for the car. Then both.

IIRC, the first usage of the term was "bimmer", which showed up in car enthusiast mags. However, non-enthusiasts would pronounce it "beemer". After that it kind of just became interchangable.

MikeSid 06-09-2005 12:02 PM

Gracias. I always thought it was "beemer" for both but I guess that just make me one of the unwashed in BMW circles. I have a friend who insists there is a motorcycle v. car basis for the distinction, but your reason seems more plausible to me. Anyway...

I was thinking about putting some side draft carbs on it for fun. Does anyone know what carbs might fit? Souk, I know you have mess around with some.

Funny, I had dinner with a security solutions vendor last night and he grew up next door to the Dinans.

Ok, so I have found an 85 735i 3.5 inline 6 turbo motor that I think would be pretty "simple" to plop in there. As visions of sugar plums dance in my head.

She wouldn't be as nimble but it would have some serious balls.

If my daughter was any older I would have bought that car from you Terry. There are quite a few sources for "crate" bmw engines. The roadfly forum is pretty good for BMW's

Ft. Meyers has a pretty good course and is pretty active. Have you driven it (autocross) stock yet? I doubt you would run out of brakes on an autocross.
