All-in-one Washer Dryer
 

I was wondering when these things would come out. Seems to make sense from a pratical point of view. Less space, lower cost, unattended full clean/dry cycle.

I recently saw this offering from a company named Haier. Sounds German, right? Nope. They're Chinese and recently tried to buy Maytag to "legitimize" themselves and get instant large footprint.

Interesting how their "About me" page says nothing about their China connection.

Saw similar in an apartment in Dublin last month. Did not have chance to use.

The idea is very cool. . .and something I have experience with. ...I did a large portion of design work for one of the unattended full clean/dry cycle type of machines. Alll I can say about it is, it's way cooler than that one linked, there. It's not out yet; as the US company was swayed into a bad contract by a Chinese appliance mfg company. They took the plans, and never delivered -yadda yadda - I'll bet we see a knock-off of all its proprietary coolness soon. :(

Anyway, the ventless type are big sellers to all the apt/condo convertion type folks. (as apt's usually have building central laundy facilities . ..not in the units, as condo owners expect)

The vented type will vastly out perform the ventless, in most circumstances.

I loved when they sang "Everybody have Fun Tonight!"

Anyway, I can see the appeal of one of these for bachelors, but it sure is nice to be able to run a washer and dryer at the same time if you have a family with lots of clothes.

Edit - on further thought, I guess you could get two of these and then you'd have the real setup. :D

I'll bet these things will take off when they hit the market.

The ventless part I can live without. However, it would make it much easier to hide in the house.

I also recall a Japanese company designing a all-in-ne but they used microwave technology to dry the clothes very quickly ??

To me, its all about the spin. The more you squeeze out, the less you need to dry..

Never used one myself, but the compact or "apartment design" ones apparently don't work that well from those I've talked to.

I have one, and it does a great job of wrinkling your clothes. I've taken to hanging my shirts and pants instead, letting good 'ole evaporation take its course...

Been out for years. I saw them in an Apartment complex in the Middle 80's, and those machines had been in for 10 years.

Biggest downside: Not being about to wash the next load while the last load dries.

I used one for a while in the UK, and found it to be a very nice option. It is not as much of a hassle not to be able to load the next washload immediately, and this is far outweighed by the benefits that come with a small footprint.

Anyone familiar with the brand "Thor"? My wife is thinking of purchasing one of these units for her folks. Thanks.

Jim, Thor doesn't seem to have a vented w/d-combo. Their dry time is 1-2 hours. (only buy ventless, if your building conditions require it) thats my 2 cents.

I did quite a bit of research into these, being an NYC dweller and all.

Also, there is an LG that is available.

All of these use condensation drying, which is OK, but not as effective as hot air.

Also, the load size really isn't that great. You can wash Barbie's clothes and a few hankerchiefs, but forget about the beach towels.

I determined to pass based on ultimate space requirements, but I know others who have the Malber, and they think it's OK, not great.

The Haier is very inexpensive @ $200. Must be small.

An ideal setup for me would be two near-fullsize stackable units. But I guess you can't stack a washer on top of another appliance.

Actually Rick, I think Bosch makes a stackable combo.
