I, myself spent a period of my growing up years in a single parent family (Mom) on Welfare in Oakland, Ca. during the days of racial tension (Black Panthers, asassination of Martin Luther King) and having to go to the store and purchase items with Food Stamps. It s*cked then and I'm sure it does now for people. I can comprehend the need during crisis to go after the basic needs for survival, including food, water, baby needs, clothing, hell I can even figure out a justification of comforts to possibly include furniture and bedding. But come on, when has killing and intercourse become a necessity? It was mayhem committed by a small minority due to opportunity and weather.

..

Actually, the real racist thing was assuming an article about criminals, looters, welfare families, and and those who lack personal responsibility was about blacks...when the author did not make such a claim.....definitely disturbing.

I wonder if the poster learned that in college?

What happened in NO and Biloxi and other areas of the South will turn numerous people and families into recipients of Government Aid and hopefully there will be some recourse ( jobs, industry previously lost, new improved infrastructure) that can be improved to revitalize an area that has been needing this for decades. Since it has to be rebuilt, why not bring some of the "offshore" industries back home to be performed by Americans who have done it in the past (e.g. textiles, garment workers, et. al.)

For the second time in as many days, I find myself agreeing with flintstone. Now THAT is disturbing.

The feds managing the economy is not usually a good idea. The recent past beltway managing is more politic vote getting than intelligent economics. So that also means there is a 50% chance that you disagree with this?

If still there?
Any state can foster a competitive atmosphere with other states. This all starts with the governor who's job is to incite the voters and push his policies. This is very complicated on the inner political level but not on the business $ level.

who knows.. maybe these states will be in such a weak negotiating position that they will start a serious competitive race with other states. Poland did it as well as many others in their sphere. That they didn't have old capitalist baggage to carry foreword was a definite advantage. Anyway, for instance, a state like NY is an old school economic mess. There is a long term trend in competing for their retiring well off baby boomers and NY state gov't knows it. States have lots of options with good state management. If a good PR group can warn you of the dangers of their product, lose billions to attorney generals, and put warning labels on their products And still make tons of money then I would have to say that these devastated states have a lot of options in a competitive open economy.. including N.O.
