9mm or 40SW
 

ok, have decided that a CPO Sig p226 is the best "fit" for me. my original plan was to go with 9mm, as a number of people (including the dealer) say that is a "classic" setup. but I've got another contingent that argues for 40SW, citing the migration of a lot of LEO and military from 9mm to 40SW. plus ammo seems to be starting to come down.

and yes I know the arguments on 45ACP. maybe i'll get a p220 as a second one...

so...9 or 40?

No question, .40 cal is a lot better round. 9mm is nice but is lacking on the wallop feature, and the .40 just packs a better punch.

9mm is a classic "over-penetrator". Gotta love that! (It's what I have.)

over-penetrator? What do you mean? Goes through instead of in and stop?

If you are getting a 226, get the caliber it was designed for 9mm. If you want a 40 get a 229.

There are some super cool Navy Seal Surplus (not the NSW) 226s floating around for about $800 if you could find one.

get the nine. i posted on your other thread. with the correct ammo, you wont have any problems. besides, just like everything it is bullet placement. i bet money you will never have to shoot anyone. i still think with a handgun, the real problem is the bullet going through walls, and hitting a bystander.

oh, if you use the gangsta sideways shot, i will laugh.

that's a good point. The dealer highly recommended 9mm for the p226...he said that was the optimal setup. Maybe a 229 down the road ;)

BTW the 226 is a pretty big gun that will not be too comfortable to conceal effectively, i have one, but being in Cali you probably could not conceal legally anyway. Consider it a sidearm and it is one of the best large frame pistols in the world.

9mm AKA Hole puncher. Go with a .40 or better yet a .45.

Depending on the type of ammo, 9mm can have a soft-tissue penetration of 8" to 13"! It's a small, high velocity slug. It is a deadly handgun in part because the high velocity produces secondary projectiles (after high speed penetration, bone fragments spread through adjacent tissues causing more damage). Also, 9mm rounds have been known to pass through a soft target and find another one. .40 and .45 caliber are bigger and slower, the stop and drop type.

I have never and don't ever intend to shoot anyone, so I love my 9mm for target practice. I like the way it fits my hand and the 15 round clip is great. If I was in the market for a self-defense weapon, I'd likely choose a .40.

wrt stopping power, etc, from what I read it depends on the load and design of the bullet. And where you put it. I don't plan on putting it anywhere but in a target though...but you never know.

Law enforcement frequently uses hollow point 9mm rounds like the Black Talon rounds that were popular in the 90's. They had the high muzzle velocity and deep penetration of a 9mm, but the slug would expand to maximize tissue damage and reduce the chance of secondary target strikes.

A solid 9mm bullet is a little like a .22 LR round, high velocity and maybe dangerous if you don't know what's behind your target.

For Target Work...it's 45 ACP all the way....there is only one real 9mm Target gun and thats a Sig P210-6.....and that gun is way outa your league cost wise....about 3K...it essentially is the best auto pistol ever built...btw it's not a Sig Sauer product...which I generally don't like...

I guess if your gona fk aorund you might as well fk around with the 40 S&W....

Sorry can't help but inject - and I know nothing bout guns or care to. For home defense why not a shotgun? Hand guns (to me) are for concealment and more preferred by people living in fear or employed where a firearm is a necessity.

I have no fear of guns. I've shot a 357M and 44M, done some range shooting wiath a 38sp, and my Dad taught me to shoot his 12ga - but no formal training. I just don't subscribe to the fear reasoning folks use to own handguns. If I ever, ever, felt like I needed a handgun to properly protect myself I would move before getting the gun. No question, no hesitation. I am not afraid of guns or even killing a person - bad as that sounds. I just refuse to put myself, and family, in that position. I am more afraid of something accidental happening in a household with kids/young adults when guns are in the mix. In a home invasion hand guns are only effective if they are accessible and loaded. Exactly the bad recipe for 99.9999 of the time spent in a household with kids.

Sorry to inject a anti-gun post in this thread but I just could not sit idle while following a person I respect go to the dark side...

Love the Sigs....but I am purchasing my first hand gun soon(I have inherited some old revolvers), and it will be a Springfield 1911 .45.

Tabs is correct about target shooting. I came in biased as hell about those 'old' steel frame pistols....but target after target does not lie. Its a wonderful proven design.

I want to add that following the past LA riots and recent NO events I am considering a shotgun for basic last resort home defense. It would of course be in the locked in the attic and ammo far far away.
