Serious Barbque
My fancy schmancy $2000 BBQ pit by Klose has arrived.. Thats what Mother calls it by the way. She says it better turn out some dam fine Q or else....
Anyway this thread is not about Mother but about my new Q. It arrived yesterday afternoon, and after admiring it for a bit (taking pics and taking things apart to see how it worked) I slathered the complete interior with Vegetable Oil and put a 10 lb of Kingsford ablaze in the fire box.(Charcoal in that metal thing on the Ground). It ran for 5 hours or so at 300 F to SEASON the metal as one would with a cast iron skillet. The construction of the Q is really quite good all the welds are clean, the ends of the Drum are all ground. There really was a lot of thought behind and attention to detail in the building of this unit.. I'm impressed, the only knock on it is the damper holes in the Firebox Door, should have been cleaned up by grinding the rough edges. The Charcoal Box really works you light the Charcoal at one end and it will burn to the other...that way your Charcoal and heat is timed..to give a long burn. The drum is all 1/4 inch steel plate and the Fire Box is 1/2 inch steel plate. The extra Charcoal Firebox must weigh at least 40 lbs. . This really is a unit for the serious BBq'er...But all in all my thought are why waste your time and money screwing around with a $200 Smoker...when U can go right to the Gravy. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131132391.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131132441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131132479.jpg |
"Anyway this thread is not about Mother . . ."
Au contraire - everything is about Mother . . . |
You should have a party and invite everyone from the neighborhood... except for the neighbor lady. She's a nasty 'ol wench, isn't she? Something about water going into her lawn or some such nonsense

Looks well made to me Tabs, has that "Fabshop" appearance. This usually means great craftsmanship, poor corrosion protection (we suck at that:)). So keep an eye on the coatings burning off.

And this one is my trusty old Weber that I bought in 1982http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131133023.jpg This one is my Big Green Egghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131133125.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131133270.jpg Today I have a 5 lb Brisket in the Q running at 225 F.... |
Nice piece of work! ( not you Tabs, the Q) :D
Looks like a well made grill. Way better than my old home center smoker. Whats the extra box for? |
Klose puts on 5 coats of 1300 F paint...but he warns that it will need to be touched up once in awhile. The heating and cooling of the metal tends to flex it and thus the failure of the paint...
Also 1/4" and 1/2" steel plate isn't going to rust through anytime soon. After comparing it to my $260 New Braufel Smoker there really is no comaprison.. |
The extra box on the ground is for Charcoal...by burning in an S pattern the charcoals burning is time released...
