What about Esteban? I have a 5.1 cd that sounds awsome. Is he really over rated?

Oh, I had forgotten about Vito Bratta. Years ago, I learned just about all his solos. It was great practice and he always inspired me. That solo for Little Fighter is to this day one of the toughest I've ever learned.

Phil played with a band called The Glass Harp. Yeah I was lucky to grow up in Cleveland in that era. man it was music music music. The list of guys I know that "made it" from there is long. I'm not one of them. Trent Rezner played in a disco band in those days. Eric Carmen and the Mentor Mafia, The Deadboys. The list is long. I'm happy playing the blues in Florida these days, and I don't have to deal with the record companies. After working for Warner Bros. and RCA records for many years I don't miss that crap. Just let me play my bass and leave the buisness part of it to the kids. They will learn soon enough. The record biz will eat you, they are all vampires.

Speaking of the Dead Boys, Peter Laughner (since he kinda started the band as Rocket from The Tombs - RIP) & Cheetah Chrome were/are great.

Stiv is dead of course, I talked to Jimmy a couple of years ago and he was doing something with Cheetah but I don't think it ever happened. I would like to get a hold of Jeff though. he was a good friend and I just totally lost touch with him after he moved to NYC. They did a reunion gig at the rock hall of shame and I heard they rocked the house. Nice to know us geezers can still burn the house. Let us not forget Pere Ubu.

Actually i heard recently that Cheetah was dead.....true?

Overrated

Santana - I don't think I've ever heard him play a chord! Even Satriani plays rythmn every now and then!

Kirk Hammett - This guy's foot needs to be separated from hi wah pedal.

Underrated

John Petrucci (Dream Theater) - technically perfect and incredibly versatile.

Al Di Meola - ok, so he's not underrated by those who know, but this guy is incredible!

Steve Morse - pretty much identical to John Petrucci without the huge heavy metal influence.

Brian May - Great tone, also incredibly versatile

One guitarist I've always liked and haven't seen mentioned is Tommy Bolin. Pinch hitter for James Gang and Deep Purple and his solo stuff is good too.

tommy bolin...and what about mick ronson??

and there's a guy 'Euroboy' who plays in the norwegian band Turbonegro...

I wish we could get more rock threads going...

and no Cheetah Chrome is very much still alive. A friend of mine's band was just touring with him. http://www.cheetahchrome.net/

Thanks for the link...god it brings back some blurry memories! Jimmy hasn't changed much. Cheetah looks pretty good for all the miles he has on him. Any idea where Jeff is? This old T-Bird has been lookin' for him for a while. his trail went cold a couple of years ago.

I will ask around, I don't know... the reformed Rocket From The Tombs played in Boston 2 years ago, and I missed the show due to 30"+ of snow falling that day. In spite of the blizzard, the show sold out.

Did you know peter laughner, or the guys from the pagans?

Uh oh, we are ruining this thread...

yep...those were different days though. I actually turned the guys on to Jeff as I could not tour at the time. Jimmy used to manage a record store in Parma OH.

Anyway , I thought they were pretty light for the money they asked for tickets.
Damn. I retract that bet I made earlier since nobody has taken me up on it yet I dont doubt Ginger lacked energy. I think he just got his new liver right before that show

After a couple of days of listening to a lot Zeppelin for the first time in a while, Im going to go back on what I said about Jimmy Page

I didnt call him a hack becuase he was sloppy or noisey, I kinda like that characteristic of his playing. I still think he took a lot of his work from other people (Beck/Clapton), but the guy really knew how to put some neat stuff together.

Overrated -> Ted Nugent

Underrated (though mainly in this thread) Mark Knopfler. Go back and listen to the title cut on "Brothers in Arms."

Agreed. I had the pleasure of attending an intimate guitar clinic he and Portnoy put on in Boston, and he blew everyone's minds. He's not just technically perfect, he plays with authority and passion. Just listen to "Home" from the Scenes from a Memory Part 2 disc. Mindblowing. He's definitely in my top 3...with Steve Howe being #1.
