Christmas came early - cycling content

I know there are at least a few of you out there that may appreciate this. :)

Old school canti's:

Phil Woods:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1134515370.jpg

Fillet-brazed goodness:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1134515429.jpg

Spec's:

Custom Rodriguez frame and fork fillet-brazed w/ True Temper OX Platinum double butted cromoly tubset (tandem downtube), front and rear rack braze-on's, front and rear cantilever bosses, chain hanger, custom bottle opener brazed to seat stay, three water bottle braze-on's, custom light metallic blue paint w/ three (edit: two) panel masks in white, full Campagnolo drivetrain minus the cranks which are RPM's, Velocity Deep V 36 hole rims (four cross lacing) w/ Phil Wood hubs and DT double butted stainless steel spokes, Phil Wood bottom bracket...etc.

The bike is built to be the ultimate work horse commuter. Fenders will be in order for our wet spring months but will most likely be removed for the summer. A rear rack will be a permanent fixture for the panniers.

Any suggestion on a good lighting system and a good trip computer?

Oh, and sorry about the blurry pictures. ;)

Rodriguez makes sweet bikes. My favorite steel bike I ever owned was a Davidson (neighbors I believe). And Phils rock. I had a set of hubs on my commuter that never wore out. Although I did manage to snap a Phil's bb spindle. That was fun...not.

Great. I'm not a small guy and that isn't good news. It must have been your super-human power that did it. ;)

Davidsons are sweet too. I went to both shops and just felt more comfortable with the crew at R&E. Got the full tour...meeting the people that were going to be building and painting my bike was a big plus. I'm sure Davidson would have done the same, but they didn't offer it. Rodriguez insisted on it. :)

Plus, they want to display it at their booth at the Seattle Int. Cycling Expo here in Feb.

I think Davidson is a bigger operation now than they used to be. As far as I can determine, my Phils BB issue was very isolated. In fact, no shop I talked with had ever heard of one snapping. But mine did, while taking off from a stoplight. Almost crashed hard but managed to stay upright.

I also had a Rivendell that was pretty amazing too. There are a few great steel builders left out there...

Rivendell does lugs like no one else.

No kidding...that bike is HUGE! What is the frame measurement? I ride a 58 cm for comparison.

dd74 12-13-2005 04:41 PM

Very nice frame. Drago, how tall are you? That top tube looks like it'd go up to my shoulder.

arcsine 12-13-2005 04:50 PM

I gotta say the boys look like they are bumming. Looks like they are thinking "Where is my new bike dad?".

The R&E and Davidson bikes are very nice. Congratulations.

Good looking bike. I prefer the clean look of brazed frames over lugs. Can you explain the reasoning behind more spacers vs an extended head tube?

Ha beat me to it. Nice bike. I've had some nice results with the Cateye electronics, computers and lights

jorian 12-13-2005 05:23 PM

"Can you explain the reasoning behind more spacers vs an extended head tube?"

That's probably the biggest head tube they make unless Rod. makes his own tubing. Probably changes the geometry as well.

Cool rig! Giant, but cool.

cantdrv55 12-13-2005 05:25 PM

Yeah Drago, how tall are you? That bike looks like it's made for Shaq!

If you're ever going to put the bike on a trainer, go wireless computer. Just bought a Cateye myself.

Ooooh, that's pretty! I want a pair of Phil's for my fixie really badly. I've got my eyes on a set, so watch this space.

Any better pictures of the bottle opener.

Oh, and ahead of Rivendell in the "now its getting silly" lug category are these guys in Aussie (and others, I'm sure):

Best quality bike I ever rode was a Land Shark. Best bike (race wins) was a Trek 2300 carbon w/full 7 speed DuraAce. At 5'11" I'm pretty much average height and didn't need anything custom made. Now I prefer the S3 - tames the steepest climbs with a grin.

Nice looking bike and nothing beats Campy...

We haven't done final sizing yet. I'm sure we'll end up dropping the bars down a good amount and then cutting the excess off the top.

I'm 6'7" in socks. The frame is completely custom but I think it measures out to ~62cm. Top tube is extra long as well as the down tube (which came from a tandem tube set).

I wanted S3 but there is a 185# weight limit...which I surpassed in about 11th grade. ;)

Gary,

They had just woken up from a long car-ride nap. The little one is getting his first bike this Christmas, a Torker 12". Too bad Torker doesn't still do the twin top tube thing.

Good God. Wow. That is getting a bit silly. I dig the leather saddle though.

I'll try to get better/more pictures this weekend when I go to give them more money. :)
