What is the fine for driving with an exp. reg. in NY?

This is largely hypothetical, but what happens if you are pulled over with an expired registration what kind of fines etc. I was told (by a neighbor) that you go through the system, ie. mandatory arrest etc. this seems a little extreme. Anyone have some unfortunate story to relay on this OR if there is anyone in law enforcement I would like to know.. I suppose I could just call DMV but they are closed until tomorrow...

In Jersey they can impound your car right there on the spot, as in get out of the car, tow truck pulls up, you take a cab home....I wouldn't risk it....I'm sure it is similar in NY....

I saw someone with an expired 20 day transit tag in their window, I could find myself in a similar situation soon ..... Waiting forever for a title from NJ of all places..

Adam, good to see you got your car fixed.

It's a fine. And they let you drive away. Many times, on the 1st or 2nd of the month, they will station troopers at the Toll booths of the NYS Thruway to find violators.

Im pretty sure, its a fine and points and instant impound.
A few years ago I got pulled over in Staten Island for an expired temp plate, and they wouldnt let me drive the car away. Now they impound.

Wow. That is extreme. My manager's son was pulled over last weekend for driving on a tag that expired in June of this year. A ticket was all he received.

I accidently let my tag expire once (long story) and when I went to get it renewed the fine was $24.

Here in Alabama, they're just tickled to death if we even have a tag on the car. I don't know how many cars I've seen with a piece of cardboard where the license plate is supposed to be with "Lost Tag" wirtten on it. That appears to work just fine here.

that would get you automatic arrest here in NJ or in NY

The registration sticker on my trailer's tag expired (it was parked near my house) and the officer knocked on my door and asked me to park the trailer on my driveway to prevent it from being impounded. That was nice of him. I renewed the registration the same day.

I do have experience with this. It is a fine. I don't recall the amount, but it was not too high.

It is not big deal, but is easy enough to renew. DO NOT go without insurance. They make a big deal about that one..

ditto

They'll pull over out of staters that may not have required insurance and impound the car. If you have Mexican plates they'll get stopped by every PD that see them. Those plates get more attention than a neon sign.

I called the DMV and the person there said the fine all depends on what kind of ticket the officer gives you.(!) So there is some lassitude... but it goes experience by experience, no solid info from the dmv, surprised? Thanks everyone for your info.
Ronin--I remember the bright green VT plates always seemed to attract the parking tickets here in NYC..

Here in Cali they don't issue temporary tags, just a piece of paper in the front right windshield which no one can read. You could probably drive for years here without a tag. Oh, they do have a month tag for resales, which many mexicans just tear off. If you have a tag, best to remove it since it has a month and year. Drive without and you won't get stopped. Really stupid logic.

Out of state cars are the bane of Williamsburg. On my block the "brownies" do not bother ticketing them, as they do not know the rules for out of state registration and inspection (if there is any..) If you have NY plates and stickers and go ONE day over - you are done. And all of those Ohio and from wherever cars, do you really think they pay their parking tickets?? I doubt it.

Contrary to what you might assume, Mr. Cramer the only Cheech and Chong I do is "Basketball Jones"- -- That sheet never gets tired!
On a more serious note: when is the next NY metro area raise-a-brew?
