iPod essentials - Neil Young

I went to itunes and did a search for Neil Young. Holy****! He has over 40 albums on there. I looked through a handful of them and finally just decided to pull most of the tracks from a greatest hits album down that I recognized. Here's what I have right now, looking for suggestions on other great stuff that I've missed:

Yeah. You'll need Sweet Home Alabama to balance it out.

I like this music review site

I find that their tastes are reasonably close to mine, YMMV.

Also gotta look at CSN and CSNY, for more Neil.

Some of my favorite Neil Young songs are on Harvest Moon.

How about:

Cinnamon Girl
Cortez the Killer
Alabama

Other then that you have most of my favorites.

Cowgirl in the Sand
Mr. Soul
Powderfinger
Tonight's the Night

I was going to tell you to check out 4 way street for some really long jams on Southern Man, Ohio, etc. but the iTunes version is nuetered for some reason.

Just about the whole "On the Beach" album. "Greendale" is fantastic, but you need the whole thing. The whole album tells the story of a small town; individual songs make no sense without the others.

Ditto for Old King (from Harvest moon) and Cinnamon Girl.

I really like Cripple Creek Ferry too.

notfarnow 12-22-2005 06:25 AM

oh, and Helpless.

Absolute favorite NY song.

in addition to ones mentioned:
Thrasher (MUST have)
Sample and Hold
This Notes For You
Walk On

Va Steve's plus
Country Home
Sedan Delivery

But the better bet is to get some of his live stuff from dimeadozen.org or Further-the Santa Cruz show from 95 is pretty hot, most of the early 90's Crazy Horse stuff is smokin'

Look Out For My Love
Tell Me Why &
Are You Ready For The Country
Can't get through an evening of doing Neil Young tunes without Tell Me Why, Needle & The Damage Done and Old Man. I was blown away a few months ago. Going-away party for a friend of my son's and a 20-something female friend of theirs asked me to do a NY song I hadn't heard in years. I guess we owe this sort of thing to file sharing.

If you want early NY get the "Decade" album, then you can get 'Rust Never Sleeps" and "Harvest Moon" for the newer stuff.

Who is Neil Young??

campbellcj 12-22-2005 10:05 PM

I would add Sugar Mountain, Down by the River, Helpless...fairly early stuff.

I am not a huge Neil fan but have a few commercial CD's and also acquired an amazing 2-disc soundboard boot ("Winterlong") from 1970.
