Sad Day

Dakota had been limping for a couple of days.

Diagnoses is bone cancer.

That's it.

I'm devastated.

Beautiful black lab and yes it is a sad story. Hope he is comfortable. I'm sure he had a great life and was a loyal companion.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dakota, Scott. Even knowing that every so-often we have to say goodbye to a treasured buddy, we continue to put ourselves through it because they are so worth it. He's obviously been loved and spoiled and lived the good life. Give him a scratch behind the ear from us.

How old is he?

Sorry to hear it. The bond between humans and dogs is one of the better things I've experienced on this earth.

We lost our first Dane to bone cancer. It's a difficult time, and our thoughts are with you.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

We just got back from the vet.

Dakota went peacefully.

My wife and I held her and stroked her and it was OK.

I've had lots of dogs and cats in my life but this never gets any easier.

widgeon13,
she's actually a cross of a Newfoundland and English Mastif.

Mastif's have an exceptionally high tolerence for pain. If they display discomfort then it's usually excrutiating.

Our last Mastif also developed bone cancer and was originally misdiagnosed. He suffered much longer than he should have.

I was not going to let the same happen to Dakota.

Hug your pets every day.

Scott

Sorry for the mistake, hope your days get better soon. We lost a golden a few years ago and it seemed like forever that I would come home from work and still hear the jingle of the collar. We finally got another golden but it is one of the most difficult experiences you will have to deal with. It's very hard for people who don't have pets to understand what the lose means but for us pet people, we know how you are suffering. She's in a better place and the suffering has ended for her.

We too send our thoughts to you and your family.
Our chocolate lab "Chip" turned 16 at Christmas and we dread the day when he leaves us. We can only imagine the hole that Dakota has left.

Years ago on the Phil Donahue Show (remember him?), the topic was pet loss.
A dozen or so folks sitting up on stage telling their stories.
One woman told of losing her husband and how she dealt w/her grieving by having their German Shepard sleep next to her, its head on her husband's pillow, etc., so she could hug the dog. Then months later, she had to put down the GS.
Her weeping from deep within her gut brought tears to my eyes.

When she was telling of how she placed their GS's head on the pillow, the audience began to openly giggle and snicker.
I was astounded.
Out of the blue, a psychiatrist stood up in the front row, turned around to the audience, and began to chastise them.
Paraphrasing: "What we have here is the very human reaction to loss of relationship. A relationship is a relationship...whether between humans or between animals and humans. Loss is loss...the grieving process can be the same for the loss of a pet as it is for the loss of a close human. In some cases, the grieving process is much deeper for the loss of a pet because of the experience of unconditional love that they bring."
.
We animal lovers know it as something very special, don't we?
