have you ever been addicted to nasal spray?

i cant even use the stuff, or i get instantly hooked.

There was this special 'spray' I used to get. Damn expensive.

Required a special 'rolled up dollar bill' device for use.

'Think they work out to be about $.50/pop if you don't get them at Costco or on sale.
When I'm using them a lot, I pull off the nylon "spring strip", slap it onto a wide/long band-aid, and use them again/again. Works for me.
Important to clean skin oil off'n yer node for good adhesion.

I used to use some prescription stuff that felt like I was snorting a lit propane torch.

Nasal Steriods. Why the h3ll would I want muscles in my nose? It's friggen big enough as it is!

i've used it off and on for 20 years..certain alcohol (or is it too much alcohol..lol) does it to me. i keep it by the bed..no way in hell i won't use it if i have to sleep..and i take it with me if i think i may be drinking at all. try to spray only once in each nostril. i used to be badly addicted to it, but if i'm conservative with it, i'm okay.

How could you get addicted to nasal spray? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I am genuinely curious!

bigchillcar 03-03-2006 01:38 PM

chris..it's an anti-histamine...your body produces substances that do the job naturally, but not as well as nasal spray. so you use it for a while and your body downregulates production of its own natural anti-histamine. take away your nasal spray now and you'll be out for blood..lol

i never understood the reason. thx ryan.

i am borderline claustrophobic. every time i plug up, i get tiny panic attacks. at least figiity, forget about sleeping. so i started in on the afrin. by the time i was done i owned maybe 10 containers and i had them stashed all over the place. when my doc, lectured me, my girlfriend made me hand them over. she was scared for alittle. doc, ok's some brands that are not addictive. the stuff they give you to overcome the addiction works well too.

I had a girlfriend many years ago who was (I don't think addicted is the right word), "attached" to nasal spray.

According to her, she reached a point where if she did not routinely use nasal spray she would immediately clog up, just like if she had a bad head cold.

When she decided to quit, it was about 10 days before her membranes cleared up without the nasal spray.

I don't know how one gets "attached", but be careful out there.:)

I haven't breathed clearly for a single day of the past 20 years. Maybe it's time to get addicted.

Yep. . . Afrin. My allergist had me doing it twice a day plus a steriod spay one a day, 2 out of 3 days per week. Seems I started using the Afrin too much and before long I could not breath through my nose without it. I had to go through a withdrawal procedure that included pedizone (?) and saline nasal spray. All in all I had to stay off the stuff 4 months before using it again.

Pardon my spelling. :D

The "prednisone" was oral. Nasacort was the secondary spay. No burning sensation at all.

"Fortunately" I was given the propane torch about, oh, 15-20 years ago, so..

"NO SPRAY FOR YOU!"

Vipergrün 03-04-2006 12:28 AM

Two things to mention. If you are constantly plugged up, have poor sense of taste and smell, get checked for nasal polyps. I had literally hundred removed and it was amazing to be able to breathe, smell, and taste again.

Also, if you use too much of the spray, it will eventually make things worse, and will stop working.

I only use OTC stuff now once in a while.
