CarMax - has anyone here dealt with them?
I've been tapped to sell my mother-in-law's car, and had the thought CarMax would be the most expedient way to do so.
If anyone's interested, her car is a white 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE with automatic trans, leather, sunroof/moonroof, CD player, and rear spoiler. It has 52,000 miles. We're asking $10K for the car. This would be an L.A./SoCal-area sale. Anyway, I'm thinking of taking it to CarMax to see what they might give me for it. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks.

Normally, you will get slightly above wholesale blue\black book
Take it in, doesn't cost anything for them to make an offer, and you are not obligated to accept it. AFJ

They gave me a lowball offer on my Mini when I sold it, it was a waste of an hour or so for me. It was a nice fallback though, just in case.

They recently offered me $18.5K on my wife's 03 Expedition 4x4 after I responded to their inquiry from my Craigs list add. I'm selling for $21K which is bottom price bracket for similar examples. I'll hold out another couple weeks...

Bought a Jeep GC Sport from them and it was nothing but trouble. 3, yes 3 transmissions later, all covered by the warranty,thankfully--the check engine light goes on once again, after the warranty runs out. Just traded it in for a Subaru. Carmax sucks in my opinion.

Since they are a dealer they can't offer too well or they won't be able to turn around and sell the thing for much. If you are looking for speed, they might be your best route, but if you have a bit of time and can manage the hassle you'll probably get quite a bit more selling privately.

I sold a car to them. They are a wholesaler and will buy anything. Some things (like my car) end up back on the lot. They offer a little more than KBB "Good" trade in and (if the sell it) sell for a little less than KBB dealer "Good".
The stuff that isn't their kind of car gets sent to the auction. (Yes, I asked them all about it while they were buying my car. I'm a fosey nucker.) Whole process takes about 2 hours. If you still owe something on the car, you need a Cashier's check.

I have sold two cars to them, the process is easy, and the prices are okay.
Give it a shot, its only an hour. Michael
