school here has an optional sex ed course in 6th grade. **edit: that I immediately signed them up for**
That, followed with a question and answer session with mom and\or dad worked well for both my son and daughter. of course.... my daughter is allowed to date when she is 35, or when I die, whichever comes first.. Double standard.... hell yes... AFJ

Seriously? When they are old enough to ask reasonable questions, they are old enough for reasonable answers.
In my house there is no more angst about discussing sex than any other topic.

Sat my 11 y/o down because we saw he was starting to hit puberty.
I sat him in fron tof the TV and threw in a Porno and told him to watch. Then asked if there were any questions. Not really. I gave him a very non-descriptive talk about what changes he was having and why. I diod not go into detail and answered any question he had. I am proud that my relationship w/ him is more of a friends thing where he can talk to me comfortably about this stuff.
