Smile looking for a used toyota 4x4..(89-92)

i bought an '88 new back in the day and loved it. think i may have found the one i've been looking for. initially was looking in the 2k range, but there seems to be a world of difference jumping up to just 4k. what i found is a black, 1991 std cab, short bed, 4x4 (what i want), with the 22RE engine (what's the 'e'?), 4 inch lift, 35's tires, motor runs great, 166K mi, full tune up & many parts replaced with receipts, $4,500, obo. thinking of offering 3.5k and seeing from there. thoughts?

I have a '88 4x4 truck with a 22RE motor

E = I believe it stands for fuel injected (injected model)

yeah, i'd prefer 31's or 33's, but decided to pass..turned out to be an auto transmission.

The better 4x4s are the 1985 and older Toyota 4x4s (and 4Runners) with the solid front axles. Now that's a tough off-road rig to beat. I've dreamt of a black 1985 4Runner since I saw the one in Back To The Future.

only thing with the older (i agree about the solid axle) trucks is i prefer the efi engines that came after '86 i believe..my '88 was efi.

I always think about placing those steel wheels (wagon wheels) on it.
I may someday...

1985 was the first year for EFI and also the last year for the solid axel. Finding a clean 85 with a 22RE will be hard to find, and the clean ones people want ridiculously high amounts for. You are better off just doing a SAS on an IFS truck as the SAS kits are super cheap right now. Also, stay away from the 3.0L V6, it’s probably the worst engine Toyota has ever made.

Some good Toyota forums are yotatech.com and pirate4x4.com

nice looking truck, jt! i like the wheels you have now better than the 'ol wagon wheel style, actually.

stanley - thanks for the tip. i did not know that about the v6. i've been looking for the 4-cylinder, but had been considering the 3.0. i'll check out those forums..may have want ads.

I had an older 4runner with the 3.0 V-6 very underpowered but never had problems with motor.

Ryan, I was at the local motorcycle shop last night. I'm judging a motorcycle show for them tonight. While I was talking to the owner his sales manager came in saying a guy wants to trade in a Toyota 4x4 for a bike. Thinks it is a 92 or 93. If you want I will try to get some more information on it tonight.
