toyota fj
anyone taken a look at the new FJ Cruiser yet? While I'm not an SUV fan per se, I do see the possibility of a tow vehicle in my future at some point. The price seems right, and I like functional over prissy (ie I don't need leather).

I've seen it on the street and at the LA show - one of the more noteworthy vehicles there. Haven't gone to a dealership to see one yet, but considering how many are already on the streets, I'd think popularity will boost the dealer markup quite a bit. Still, I don't know about that.
BTW: If you plan to tow the Porsche, make certain it can withstand not just the car, but the trailer and any spares you plan to take with. I'd really feel safe with a 4,000-pound capacity when everything's considered.

towing cap on the FJ is 5K lbs.
mileage is 16-22 depending on the config. Less than my Subie but not by much...and by a tow vehicle standard seems reasonable. |

So considering that, I'd trade in the Subie for the FJ without a second thought. Plus, they're a hella lot cooler, even if they are mini SUVs.

I think they're cool.....as an overall sporty, off road, 4WD, snow-day kind of vehicle.
But not as a tow vehicle.

I have checked one out at the dealership.
Looks good, and certainly utilitarian. But the interior felt cheap. I don't mind plastic, but don't try and make it look like machined metal....kind lame. Wait a minute....whats this on my Boxster order form......Aluminum 'look' trim.....I paid HOW much.......DOH!

There was a recent article on Automobile Mag, I think, comparing the FJ, Xterra, Hummer and the Jeep Liberty. I believe the FJ won because it is the most rugged and useful vehicle of the four. The Xterra came in second. I bought the Xterra because the FJ was just being released and I am never an early adopter.

I like it. Looks good, carries a lot, tows, apparently off-roads well, really well-priced, and its a Toyota. Big blind spots though.

I like the looks but I agree with jyl, it has big blind spots. A buddy had one for an overnight test drive and his only complaint was the blind spots. I told him to drive faster and not worry about them!

They look cool in the pictures but once I actually saw and sat in one I was disappointed. They somehow got the original FJ style but took it from rugged to cartoon superhero. I can totally see Mrs. Incredible driving it...
Edit - and my daily driver is an Audi TT. So for what that's worth ![]() |
