it seemed that he was only faster through the bends... either better rubber/suspension, or a better driver/car setup.

Impresive stuff, yes they were all Elises, it appears the driver new the track better and appeared to be equiped with considerably bigger balls than the others!

Another explanation is that the start could have been a reverse grid set up. If you have two or three races during the day for the same group of cars, its quite common (in Europe at least) to decide the grid based on the finish positions from the last race, who ever won the last race goes at the back, 2nd = 2nd to last etc makes things interesting!

bathhurst is in the game TOCA 3, and it's very accurate to that video.
on that track there are certain corners which if hit correctly really lets you run fast......although it's just a video game the driver in the video took the same lines which i do in the game......wierd
i think he was just one the line better through the important corners.
