Democratic candidate encourages illegals to vote in CA

Wow. It seem that liberals in CA are really desprate to actually encourage illegals to vote (in public).

Busby on defense, says she misspoke

By Dani Dodge
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
June 3, 2006

If an election can turn on a sentence, this could be the one: “You don't need papers for voting.”

On Thursday night, Francine Busby, the Democratic candidate for the 50th Congressional District, was speaking before a largely Latino crowd in Escondido when she uttered those words. She said yesterday she simply misspoke.

But someone taped it and a recording began circulating yesterday. After she made that statement at the meeting, Busby immediately said: “You don't need to be a registered voter to help (the campaign).”

She said that subsequent statement was to clarify what she meant.

The recording, which was played yesterday on Roger Hedgecock's radio talk show, jolted the campaign.

Busby, a Cardiff school board member, is in a tight race with Republican Brian Bilbray, a congressman-turned-lobbyist, who has based his campaign on a tough anti-illegal-immigration stance. Busby has focused her campaign on ethics reform. The two are vying to replace Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who was jailed after pleading guilty to taking bribes.

Busby said she was invited to the forum at the Jocelyn Senior Center in Escondido by the leader of a local soccer league. Many of the 50 or so people there were Spanish speakers. Toward the end, a man in the audience asked in Spanish: “I want to help, but I don't have papers.”

It was translated and Busby replied: “Everybody can help, yeah, absolutely, you can all help. You don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help.”

Bilbray said at worst, Busby was encouraging someone to vote illegally. At best, she was encouraging someone who is illegally in the country to work on her campaign.

“She's soliciting illegal aliens to campaign for her and it's on tape – this isn't exactly what you call the pinnacle of ethical campaign strategy,” Bilbray said. “I don't know how she shows her face.”

The two later met in a debate in Carlsbad last night.

Earlier, San Diego Minutemen volunteer Anthony Porrello said he got the tape from an an anonymous Minuteman and passed it on to the news media and talk radio. News of the gathering had circulated among local Minutemen before the meeting, according to William Griffith, the independent candidate in the race who has been endorsed by the San Diego Minutemen.

He attended, but did not hear the statement. He said he was in the back of the room.

“I heard what I expected to hear from a Democrat who supports amnesty,” he said. Busby says she doesn't support amnesty, but backs the comprehensive plan pushed by U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that includes opening a path to citizenship for people in the United States illegally if they pay penalties and abide by certain conditions.

Busby said that Republicans are now twisting her words. She does not in any way support or advocate that illegal immigrants vote, she said.

“I was clarifying the question that was being asked in Spanish and then stated that you do not have to be a registered voter to help the campaign because there were many people who appeared to be to be under 18 in the group who wanted to volunteer,” she said in a statement. “I'm not surprised that the Republican Party is making this last-minute, desperate ploy and it is absolutely false.

It allows you to pay more taxes to support the illegals.

Illegals have been voting, in large numbers, in California for years. While I was there one of the police forces in Southern California discovered a "document factory" wherein packages had been prepared to give away to illegals that had everything, in Spanish of course, needed to register and vote. They were being made by one of the "Reconquista" organizations (I forget which one now), and were ready for distribution to locations where they'd be completed and handed out. Number of packages, over 100,000. They filled up rooms.

There are entire small towns in SoCal that are almost completely populated by illegals.

It is ILLEGAL in Ca. to ask for ID when voting.. How nuts is that. Illegals have been voting here for years... I've read of many account where they are bussed around to various poling places and vote under a different name at each place. This is done by various groups like La Raza and they are paid for each vote they cast.

If all the American's pulled out of California, including the bussiness's, and relocated elseware - I doubt it would still be the 6th largest economy in the world.

I don't live in California, if I did, I'd do like my brother's girl freind did - move away.

California should secede from the rest of the U.S. AND Mexico. I'm sick of seeing my tax dollars go to support illegitimate wars, slush funds for buddy-buddy corporate welfare programs, and similar federal government stupidity. California is the largest donor state in the nation. For every $1.00 that goes to Washingtoon, we only get back about $0.70 in services, most of which we don't need anyway.

CA would survive a lot better without the rest of the U.S. than the rest of the U.S. would survive without California. When's the last time the federal government or another state did anything meaningful to help our state instead of trying to bleed it dry?

That said, our STATE government isn't perfect and needs major reform. The legislature drew my ire by supporting the illegal alien rallies last month. Far as I'm concerned, that's a death sentence for most of the representatives in Sacramento - certainly for the ones that went on record as supporting these people.

Any politician that supports illegal aliens, back-door citizenship paths or amnisty is one I'll oppose - regardless of party. Biggest threat to our state right now is illegal immigration and that issue pretty much trumps all the others.

Most of our water comes from the Sierra Nevada mountains (located in California) and you're honestly going to try and cite power as an example of how another state didn't try to bleed us dry? Are you flippin' serious? Have you read the accounts of deliberate supply manipulation by Enron and other companies in 2000-2001? Have you looked at the obscene rates being charged by Oregon and Washington for hydroelectric power (a lot of which has been paid for by federal money I might add)?

Sorry, if California cut itself off from the rest of the U.S. power grid tomorrow I don't see how it would dramatically change things. Yes we need more power generation, but that's a domestic ("domestic" meaning "in-state" problem to solve - not a federal one).

I'll ask again, when's the last time the federal government or another state did anything meaningful to help our state out instead of trying to exploit it or bleed it dry?

I'm sick of California being looked at like a rich relative that everyone else (all the other states and federal government) can constantly try to bum money off of to fund their own do-nothing deadbeat lifestyles. I'd fully support a secession effort at this point.

California dreams are fueled by a steady supply of pretty girls from the Mid-West. Forget water and power - when they stop coming CA will sink faster than an earthquke and tsunami combined could do...

Most, not all...in the dry years, and they'll be back, it is more critical.

I'm from California, fifth generation. All of my extended family is still there. You said we (or you) could survive better WITHOUT other states.

Not without water and power...they don't HAVE to sell it to you.

no thanks. We are on the Pacific Rim. You can keep your midwest girlies...

Last time I voted I swear I had to show a driver's license to prove who I am so I can be checked off the list. I have never heard of this "can't ask for ID"....

First, I was living in CA during the whole debacle, so was pretty close to those events. The reason CA was short of electrical power was primarily that the wholesale price of power had been semi-deregulated and the retail price was still controlled, a prescription for economic break-down which is just what happened. There was price manipulation by various companies that controlled the power, but they were enabled by the idiots in Sacto who thought they knew what they were doing. No government can control the market, all they do is screw it up, and then cry for more government intervention when they fall face down in it.

A lesson I'd suggest.

Solvable as long as the state government keeps it's sociofascist mitts off of things. Since that's unlikely, you're going to get a lot more of "good government", enjoy.

Why, CA is a magnet for every socialist in America, please, "absorb" more of them for us.

Spoken like a true socialist. California behaves like a miniature US government, having one of the most expensive, and most corrupt state governments in America. That's where you must start if you want "better", thinking collectively won't cut it.

nobody was voting , JUST CAMPAIGN WORKERS
who do not need to be voters were being asked to help
campaign NOT VOTE

BIGGER PROBLEM is the vote counters like DIEBOLD
who cheat for the BuSh2 machine
in 2000 Fla and 2004 Ohio stolen elections
and all the other dirty tricks used by the neo-conned
to prevent the correct count and prevent legal voters from voting

btw I support MASS DEPORTATIONS of ilegals
