I had sworn off cigars a few years back mostly because all the good cigar shops locally had shut down.

But thanks to you guys and your bad influence I checked out some of the websites from the last cigar thread and now have some on there way to me in the mail.

Hands down The best cigar I have had is/was:

I know little but . . .

Bolivar Belicosos Finos - Habanas.

When I was in Cuba in April, I stopped at the official cigar store in downtown Holguin & bought an assortment of cigars for the week. On the last day, we stopped again & I bought more Bolivars. Of all the ones I tried that week (and in the past) - Trinidad Fundadores, Montecristo #2, Punch Punch, Cohiba Exquisitos etc - they were my overall favs.

But then, I don't really know cigars . . .

The boys up in Connecticut can appriciate this one - Moneymakers, wrapped with Connecticut grown tobaccy! Those are great everyday stoogies. In grad school I must have smoked 2 to 4 a day. Used to be able to get them rum soaked. Yummy

I prefer pipes over cigars...Dunhill Night Cap, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, Frog Morton are all great smokes. I look goofy as hell puffing my pipe, but i look goofy as hell anyway.

How do you go about getting the right pipe? I heard that there are some places where they actually 'fit' the right shape for your face. I had a prof in college, Father John, old Irish priest. He smoked a pipe (even in class!) smelled great. Everybody loved him. Combo of the accent and the pipe.

Pipes are great. I think when I finish my book I will earn the right to smoke a pipe. Heck, maybe I'll start wearing button-up wool sweaters and Old Spice too!

The Gurkha's are pretty good. The double ligero makes for a nice smooth smoke. The Rocky Patel's are okay. The 1990's are better than the 1992's. I've not tried the Perdomo's.

If you want to PM me your address, I can see what I can do to set you up with a decent 'care package' of good smokes.

Go look on ebay for Estate Pipes, used pipes that have been cleaned and sanitized. Stick with the top makers like Dunhill, Peterson, Barling, Nording or Kirsten.

You could also visit some forums like pipes.org to get started on figuring how to pack tobacco and such. Pipe smoking is like getting into Single Malts. Lots of great flavors await you and there is more to it than meets the eye.

Real Partagas D's are my favorite as well-will be in Bermuda on a cruise in a couple weeks-is it "safe" to buy them there or will l likely end up with counterfeits?

Buy only from a tobacco dealer & they should be expensive. There are NO cheap Cuban cigars. Anywhere. See the price list on Marty's site for prices in Cuba. Then expect to pay double or triple that. Marty's Price List

Go to a shop where they sell lots of cigars, so that they are fresh. Take one out of the box and squeeze it. It should be firm but flexable. If does not and feels hard or does not rebound back then its old and dry.

Have not seen many counterfits but hear that they are out there.

I usually pay about $20 for a box of three of the D #4's. This is the duty free in Beirut, London or Cairo and about the best prices I have found anywhere.

Just do not keep the pipe in your mouth and start playing with one of your "toys"... swinging those things causes the tobacco to fall out of the pipe! :)
