Oshkosh Airventure time again. Any other pelicans going?
I will be arriving Saturday July 22 early in the morning in my pale yellowish Piper Pacer. I will be camping with my plane at least thru midweek. Based on my arrival date, I will probably end up getting parked in vintage showplane camping somewhere near the ultralight area.
I intend to keep an eye out for fellow Pelican "Gredlitzin's" red RV with the flamed nose and polished three blade prop. Any other Pelican pilots going to attend (JoeA, John Cramer, Singpilot, Cashflyer etc)? If you happen to see my plane leave a note in the door. (Pacer shown in pic below on the right)

While I can't confirm actual numbers, EAA claims that 10,000 aircraft are typically there. It truly is mind boggling what one can see there whether you are an aviation buff or not. Anyone interested in metal working, welding, composites, painting etc, can get hands on free training in daily forums. Miller, Lincoln and numerous fabrication equipment vendors also all have booths setup to try out their equipment and most offer "show special" pricing on their equipment.

I have been flying myself there for the past 12 or so years. Except for the couple of years that I flew my "ultralight" (w/out a transponder), I just cut over the water near Gary Indiana, then stay within a few miles of the Chicago's shoreline just under O'hare's airspace (at least if I had to ditch, I could do it close to land). I have considered flying direct, but SEL over water is just not smart.
I hear ya on the commercialization of EAA, but it is still an awesome experience that I wouldn't miss for anything. To walk an antique row of 10 or so better than new Staggerwings (or hundreds of warbirds or 100s of whatever) is just mind boggling to me.

Hey Tim,
Swing by Riverview Airport and pick me up, I love the idea of a couple hours up in the bird (especially over water)

My streak of going 14 years in a row will be broken this year. I am really going to miss this summer adventure. Seven of the years were flying out in my Bonanza, which was great fun. I would drop off my wife and daughter at relatives along the way and my son and I would camp at the airplane. Get memories with my son, who is now has enough hours to apply to the regional airlines. So I guess this airplance stuff is as addictive as Porsches.
For the last 5 years we have been going in luxury. Flying into MKE and renting a class A motor home with a shower and potty. It has made camping soooo much nicer. Nice enough that my wife has come along. Have a great time.

Yeah, I got my fill of camping when I was in the military, however I still tolerate camping with the plane at Oshkosh. At least the showers are alot better than they were ten years ago.

My son use to make jokes about the gang showers at OSH being worse than after gym class. Something about a lot of naked old mens bodies.
I have to agree with him on that one. Maybe I'll see you there next year.

I'm an EAA member, but haven't made it to Oshkosh yet. This was the first year in quite a while I missed the Arlington show here in the NW.
A cousin who lives outside MSP is building an RV-6, and goes to Oshkosh every year. I've flown the Bonanza to visit him, I guess it wouldn't be that much farther to Oshkosh. |

I'm here in Oshkosh now...working at various Honda displays, and will be here for the next week.
Don't look for me next to the snazzy new Honda Jet...I'll be over by the generators.
