Weird Fever, What's Going On?

Yesterday I woke up and all my joints felt achy. As the day went on I got a fever that by evening was up to 103. Horrible headache and my joints felt even worse. Took some aspirin and went to bed. This morning it is as if nothing had ever been wrong with me. I feel fine, temperature normal. Any of you ever have this happen? What would cause it?

Sounds like the initial stages of a viral infection. Frequently these will come back after a few days of feeling OK...sad to say. If you are in a Lyme endemic area I might call my doc and ask about that. I'm a vet, not a phys., so really can't comment further.

I get similar one-day things all the time, but I think mine come from extreme lack of sleep. A good day's sleep and I'm usually back to normal.

Interesting that you say this because the day prior to the event I had been up working most of the night and was dead on my feet.

Sounds viral. The muscle aches and high fever are typical.

Bryan, I'm going to be smelling coffee all day now, you bastard.

I agree with viral, given the description ... and I'll ask (without wanting to know the answer) if you've had any unprotected sex in the last week or so, or exposure to "warm, wet" bodily fluids?

Kurt,
Some years ago I had something very similar happen to me twice during a three week period. After the second time I figured out it was something I had eaten that was contaminated with bacteria. Somebody had given me some frozen tuna steaks from one of the tuna boats. However, my heart was beating pretty fast and I had turned pretty red during the episode. Don't know if this applies to you, but may be a possibility.

Were you welding a day or two before?

I had metal fume fever after replacing my front pan. Aside from my appendix bursting, I don't ever remember feeling that crappy. Then after several hours, I was instantly better.

See my post near the bottom here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=146723&highlight=zinc+fume+fever

From the OSHA web site:
Quote:
Zinc is used in large quantities in the manufacture of brass, galvanized metals, and various other alloys. Inhalation of zinc oxide fumes can occur when welding or cutting on zinc-coated metals. Exposure to these fumes is known to cause metal fume fever. Symptoms of metal fume fever are very similar to those of common influenza. They include fever (rarely exceeding 102o F), chills, nausea, dryness of the throat, cough, fatigue, and general weakness and aching of the head and body. The victim may sweat profusely for a few hours, after which the body temperature begins to return to normal. The symptoms of metal fume fever have rarely, if ever, lasted beyond 24 hours. The subject can then appear to be more susceptible to the onset of this condition on Mondays or on weekdays following a holiday than they are on other days.

Probably nothing, drink fluids, take an antipyretic(Aspirin, tylenol).

Man I remember when I got food poisoning in college, lasted a week lost about 15 pounds, it sucked, a lot.

If it has gone and you don't have any residual symptoms, rashes, or discharges you can probably ignore it. Hopefully, no high risk behavior is present (like mult sexual partners, unprotected intercourse, iv drugs, tattoos, getting bitten by rabid squirrels, take care of birds, work around cattle, or live in the central valley of cali or phoenix, etc). If you're really concerned, too many (personal) questions are required. See an MD (or NP/PA).
