Seen Miami Vice?
All right I admit it, I was a fan of the old show. Just wondering if the movie is any good.

God knows how many college classes I skipped in the late 80's to watch re-runs of Vice.
|
The intial reviews are not kind at all...................look for next weekends total box office receipts.......................that will be very telling
|
My expectations are low enough that I might manage to enjoy some parts of it.

You can't remake an 80's TV show into a movie and expect it to be successful. Look at Starsky & Hutch and Dukes of Hazard, they were both flops.
I'll boycott this one outta respect for Tubs.. |

Terrible movie. I had a hard time sitting through it. It is very fragmented. At times I was expecting some kinda dialog or change of scene, but it just kept on going. I think they were trying to give it a "Cops" fell to it sometimes, and it failed. At times it's trying too hard to be edgy, and it failed. There were so many things wrong with it that I have a hard time putting it all into words. It was uncomfortable sitting through it.
If you want to see what Miami Vice would have been like if they made a movie out of it in the 80's (put your current self in the 80's mental state...if that's possible) rent "Traffic." It made good money last weekend, because there wasn't much competing for the dollars of the demographic that goes to see action films. I expected to see car chases and such...but instead they tried to make Collin into a modern day Don Johnson, and they failed. The movie was a big waste of talent (Colin and Jamie both...and even some of the smaller name cast!). Don't go see it...it's not worth it. And I only paid matinee prices for two tickets. |
It was amazing. it is not a re-creation of the TV show or any '80s BS. It is Micheal Mann at his post-modern hyper-realism best, absolutely sublime. I would pay to see it again, and I saw it at the Arclight and paid $14.00 for the ticket and $8.00 for a small popcorn and a Sprite.
Then again, I would pay to see a dog food commercial if he directed it. As one friend said, (a great artist), "even if it's crap it will be really good crap." And it wasn't crap. |
My ears popped from all the sucking-up you just did...

Well, I don't know the guy, so it isn't really sucking-up. More like just a crazed fan.
Your ears will get blown out if you see it in a theatre like the one I saw it in. Bring ear plugs. Someone walking out said that they could rest knowing that if they ever really get shot it will not be as realistic as seeing that flick. :D |
Well, crap. Now I almost have to go see it! I need to know if I'm a Souk-guy or a Denis-guy. :D

You don't want to be a Souk-guy :D It's like being a post-renaissance ultra-upfront best...(couldn't help it Denis..don't take it badly). :D Geez...and I was just going to post...."there you have it ...in America folks can have opinions...and most times not the same opinion." |
How about if I just say that it rocked the hizzy? :)
|
You could say that...but what does it mean?
|
It could have used a little more action, but I enjoyed it.
Big fans of the show will recognize subtle references, but it isn't trying to re-create the 80's. Although visually stunning, the story lays the foundation for a franchise of sequels which bothers me, but I'll watch anything from Michael Mann. |
the story was kind of cool, but there was no action whatsoever, it was so boring
it would've been cool if it had been basically Bad Boys III (which i was expecting based on the previews), but it wasnt aned i was disappointed |
I know some people who worked on the crew. They talked about getting robbed at gunpoint by gangs several times. Reportedly Jamie Foxx walked off of the show and insisted on completing the film in the U.S. out of fear for his life.

mediocre at best.
michael mann's worst performance yet. |
It's no HEAT.
But I still enjoyed it. One of my friends worked on it. Michael Mann can be a tyrant but isn't that what art is all about. I would call my buddy and he would tell me he just got off of a 40 hour straight shift. He runs his screening rooms with a mic and all the editors take notes for hours and hours. I enjoyed it but not his best work. Jamie Foxx outshines Colin in the acting department. Colin and Gong Li have no chemistry whatsoever. |
