Three have been caught:

One caught in Minnesota, two about 20 miles from me in NJ. But of course, according to official sources, there was never anything to worry about.

Yeah, right.

legion 08-09-2006 06:04 PM

Well, if they said there was something to worry about, then it would have been intentionally causing a panic for political gain--probably staged by the President himself.

Porsche-O-Phile 08-09-2006 06:06 PM

If they pose "no terrorist threat" then why does the FBI even shive a git?

Nah...I think Cheney would probably do something more overt. :)

Why do we allow foreign students in our country, particularly from the MidEast? Many of my engineering school classmates from the late 70s/early 80s were Iranians ( .... most drove brand new black and gold TransAms for some reason - god, they loved those cars  ). Now they're all back home with their US educations working on the nuclear bomb program .....

Because american students are too dumb and/or too lazy for being productive in the sciences and engineering fields. That is too much work for too little money in their taste. But there is a need for qualified scientists if the USA wants to keep being a leader. I get resumes from iranians, chinese and indians all the time for phDs and postdocs. Never from US citizens. Personally, I prefer working with the chinese: they are very smart and hard working, although they can be sneaky at times, and their english often sucks ;)

Perhaps your organization is not doing good recruiting, does not have comparable compensation programs or is not an attractive employer for qualified US students. I don't believe qualified organizations are finding it difficult to attract excellent graduates in the sciences and engineering. I disagree that American students are dumb or lazy.

Your generalization is quite unwarranted.

When was the last time you took a tour in the sciences department of any campus? My generalization is warranted by my experience, which of course is not universal, but how does yours compare?

The fact is not all illegals come from Mexico/Central America. And they did not get here by swimming. If you look at student and tourist visas granted, who showed up and who went home - there are a few extra million people who have gone missing.

I graduated from a college that is known for it's engineering cirriculum and the enrollment in that specific field has been expanding. I also spent 30 years in an industry that relies heavily on recruiting from the engineering and science fields and we never had a difficult time finding qualified candidates. On the contrary, we were disappointed at times when we did not have positions available in order to take on more good candidates. I hold the educational system more at fault for the lack of candidates in the sciences. Engineers are not finding their way into the classroom as teachers and consequently students are not becoming inspired to pursue these careers. That is very unfortunate.

I agree with you that the focus is on financial reward and that is what drives the student to pursue a different field so at least we agree on that point.

While I am not of this generation, I disagree that the kids are lazy or stupid. My inclination is that they lack leadership and mentoring both at home and in school. That is most unfortunate.

Outside of North America, I feel science and engineering are more actively promoted in the schools as opposed to a liberal arts education. We, on the other, hand promote the touchy feely concepts in the educational system.

coloradoporsche 08-10-2006 10:46 AM

Aurel is spot on (except about Chineese being sneaky).

Half of my engineering profs were foreign-born. I work in a high tech industry and about 50% of my customers are not American citizens. The free market dictates who gets hired by tech companies, and they recruit heavily from outside the US for a reason.

Funny how all the lawyers I work with are American, though.
