Anybody know the 1991-1998 W140 S Class ?
I'm investigating getting a 90s S Class, does anyone here know these cars? I'm doing research on benzworld.org which has a fair number of DIY S Class owners. Any words of wisdom on these cars?
thanks, Britt |
Went from 92-99 not 91-98

Arguably the best car ever made, from a safety standpoint. Maintenence-wise, not really sure. Absolute tanks. Double-paned glass.
Think about the Princess Diana death car for a moment; it hit an unmovable object dead center @ possibly 80 mph and the one occupant wearing a seatbelt survived! And he was sitting in the front! He is more than alive, he is relatively fine. If you've seen the post-crash photos, this qualifies as a miracle of physics in my book. Do NOT try that stunt in any other car. |
Which model...which Engine? Your question is VERY vague.

I'm leaning towards an S500, probably 95 or newer based on my initial research...
Sounds like wiring harnesses are something to look at, they tend to fray and short. Britt |

S500 = very large maintance bills. Nice car but not overly fond of them. Electrical issues will eat you alive if you are not a DIY kind of guy

If you are interested in a 1999 S420 with 55K and all the 'normal' options for $18000, let me know ASAP. It's in the Minneapolis, MN area.

You're shopping for a Mercedes from that time period and not looking at the Porsche-built 500E/E500? Shame! ;)

I have no personal knowledge of thw w140 but I can tell you they have a pretty bad reputation for reliability.
My mb wrench (benz only shop in Cincinnati) does not like them and is not shy in telling folks to stay away from them. Too much technology that breaks too easily and is difficult and expensive to fix. I too would recommend a 500E. Not as big as the S but wow what a car! I have a 93 and it has been great. Not much trouble so far, except for a few minor items. The Porsche connection is cool, also. The best DIY site for benzes is mercedesshop.com There are several techs that contribute regularly. Reading some of the problems there makes you appreciate the simplicity of our 911s! The w140 threads go on forever. |
