My two favorites are:
Gentelman Jack Canadian Club Sherry Cask ...guess it's not a true boubon...but blended. Special order but very nice. |
I'm a big fan of Jack Daniels Single Barrel. Pricey at $40 a small bottle but well worth it. I go through one a week:D

You must stay pretty warm. I only drink it to warm up.;) |
(caveat: I'm not totally in love with the sweet "boubon"-ish taste that many of the really old and expensive bourbons have)
I'm liking Woodford Reserve for a mid-level choice. I just discovered Bulleit(sp?) as a mixer and more. IFIRC it's 51% corn (the bourbon minimum) with the balance rye. That seems to give it a bit of bite for balance. Even better as it was $21 at the local store. For high dollar and highly concentrated flavor and sweetness the van winkle 12 or 15yo or the Hirsh 16yo can't be beat. Especially the Hirsh since it was distilled in 1974, also known as the Year of My Birth. Ya just gotta drink something older than you now and then. Am I not the only one who finds Makers Mark a little "soft"? Kind of the Bombay Sapphire of bourbons? (ducking) I'd never turn it down though... Then again I go to the Beam at dive bars where even the beer is iffy. mike '78SC |
Best "reasonably" priced bourbons are Makers Mark, Weller Centennial and Woodford. The Beam small batch stuff is WAY overpriced, but the Basil Hayden is probably the best of the bunch. Blantons and a few other of the small batch bourbons are crap. You may have figured out that I like the "wheated" bourbons what with me picking the two majors, Makers and Weller. The best I have EVER had was 19 yr old Weller. I heard that they found a batch of barrels that had been left in the warehouse and bottled it about 3 years ago. Haven't seen any more, but rumour has it that it was so good that they are going to age some up on purpose. Weller's current premium hooch is the Centennial, whihc replaced the Old Weller 107 that used to come in a red velvet bag. i figure that we will see some the 19 yr old in about 4-6 years. Weller normally doesn't age anything more than 10-12 years.

Reviving an OLD Thread. Just scored a couple of bottles of the elusive Black Maple Hill Bourbon. Extremely hard to find.

I came across this bottle of Eagle Rare at my moms house a while back. It is a 10 year Bourbon that was purchased about 15 years ago. Moms not much of a drinker, so I asked if I could have it. I wasnt sure if it would taste like boot water or golden nectar after so many years in a closet. I cracked it open and it was delicious. It may be worth something, I dont know. I would have kept it and drank it all the same. Its made to be enjoyed.

In December 1964 my Dad went to visit a friend of his in NYC who was the President of Canada Dry. He gave my Dad a bottle of Johnny Walker Red and a bottle of Canada Dry Bourbon both of which are still sitting unopened in my pantry. I suppose I will have to crack them open sooner or later.

I liked the Weller 107, I understand the Buffalo Trace is the current incarnation. Which I like well enough. Maybe I will have to head down to the local liquor rama and browse around.
I just as soon prefer a shot of Cactus juice as anything. Azul Anejo is really nice. |

Thats a pretty sweet up!! I have about 35 bottles I'd love to get on a shelf somewhere.

Willett and 1792 are my favorites, although I will change it up with Bullitt or Knob Creek every so often. BTW, Jack Daniel's is not bourbon.

Watershed. Local craft distillery here in Columbus. I've brought it to friends all over the country, and they rave about it. My buddy in Seattle has a standing order. If I show up at his door, I'm expected to have a bottle in hand. :D Reminds of me Balvenie Caribbean Cask.
