the sailors say...
Brandy, you're a fine girl. What a good wife you would be.
But my life, my love, my lady, is the sea. |
Um...
Huh??! Time to lay off the painkillers, man. |
ARRGH! I had my garage radio tuned to an oldies station in Portland, which has since changed format. Anyway, every evening, they'd have a request hour. Every night, during this hour a bozo in Portland would call, request: "I'd like to hear Brandy, in honor of my lovely bride Brandy." One night, sick of the tune, I phoned in: "I'd like to hear "surfin' bird", in honor of my lovely wife Agnes...because I don't know any song about girls named Agnes."

g/f is in Beijing. The boy is at the ex's. I'm sitting at Peets listening to the iPod and stealing open wifi. It's a friday night party! "The danger on the rocks has surely passed. Still I remain tied to the mast..." |
And the colored girls say,
doo do doo do doo do do doo |
"I been lost now, days uncounted and it's months since i've seen home. Take me back now, take me back now, to the port of my berth."

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way. |
Children play in the park, they dont know
I'm alone in the dark, even though Time and time again I see your face smiling inside |
Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity.

We come on the sloop John B
My grandfather and me Around Nassau town we did roam Drinking all night Got into a fight Well I feel so broke up I want to go home So hoist up the John B's sail See how the mainsail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I wanna go home, yeah yeah Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home The first mate he got drunk And broke in the Cap'n's trunk The constable had to come and take him away Sheriff John Stone Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home So hoist up the John B's sail See how the mainsail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I wanna go home, let me go home Why don't you let me go home (Hoist up the John B's sail) Hoist up the John B I feel so broke up I wanna go home Let me go home The poor cook he caught the fits And threw away all my grits And then he took and he ate up all of my corn Let me go home Why don't they let me go home This is the worst trip I've ever been on So hoist up the John B's sail See how the mainsail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I wanna go home, let me go home Why don't you let me go home |

When I was in the military lots of guys would say:
NAVY = Never Again Volunteer Yourself Maybe that was too serious for this thread, but I thought I'd share.... |

why are you letting me?
Don't know what you're talking about. Left Peets, came home, packed up the Sig, headed to the range, now back home on the couch watching F1 qualifying. Sounds like a full evening to me :p |

Across the rotting sea Nor the nails of the cross Nor the blood of christ Can bring you help this eve The dead have come to claim a debt from thee They stand outside your door Four score and three Did you keep a watch for the dead mans wind Did you see the woman with the comb in her hand Wailing away on the wall on the strand As you danced to the turkish song of the damned You remember when the ship went down You left me on the deck The captains corpse jumped up And threw his arms around my neck For all these years Ive had him on my back This debt cannot be paid with all your jack And as I sit and talk to you I see your face go white This shadow hanging over me Is no trick of the light The spectre on my back will soon be free The dead have come to claim a debt from thee |
some more 70's hits...
Im sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea Ive got to be free, free to face the life thats ahead of me On board, Im the captain, so climb aboard Well search for tomorrow on every shore And Ill try, oh lord, Ill try to carry on I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory Some happy, some sad I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had We live happily forever, so the story goes But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold But well try best that we can to carry on A gathering of angels appeared above my head They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said They said come sail away, come sail away Come sail away with me Come sail away, come sail away Come sail away with me I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies Singing come sail away, come sail away Come sail away with me Come sail away, come sail away Come sail away with me I heard the men saying something The captains tell they pay you well And they say they need sailing men to Show the way, and leave today Was it you that said, "How long, how long?" They say the sea turns so dark that You know it's time, you see the sign They say the point demons guard is An ocean grave, for all the brave, Was it you that said, "How long, how long, How long to the point of know return?" Your father, he said he needs you Your mother, she says she loves you Your brothers, they echo your words: "How far to the point of know return?" "Well, how long?" Today I found a message floating In the sea from you to me It said that when you could see it You cried with fear, the Point was near Was it you that said, "How long, how long To the Point of Know Return?" |
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. The hammer of the gods Will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming! On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow, >from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. How soft your fields so green, Can whisper tales of gore, Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords. On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. So now youd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, For peace and trust can win the day Despite of all your losing. |
...and later that night,
when her lights went out of sight came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. |
