eBay bidding - how does this work?

Can't find it on their site.

Say an item has a reserve of $10. opening bid of $1.

There are no bids on it. So the reserve is not known to me.

I put in the maximum I want to pay for the item, $15.

How will my bid show up?

Will it show at $15 (my actual bid), or will it show as $10 (the reserve)?

$10. Unless someone "forces" your bid up, by bidding past $10.

Don't bother bidding on anything until the last minute of the auction or you're just throwing your money away anyhow. There was another thread on here recently regarding "sniping" and like it or not, it's the only method that works.

Personally I wish all ebay auctions were silent auctions with NO running "maximum bid" displayed. That'd make things a lot more "free market value" - just my $0.02.

Yes, can cancel any time they want to, up to the end.

It sounds like the seller cancelled bids because they did not like the ratings of the people who were attempting to buy.

i just have a similar problem with douchebags bidding on my 911 auction

they first bid in increments of 500 , till they hit the hidden reserve, and then cancel with some dingbat excuse...
i have reported their ass to fleabay , not that it does me any good, but there is some minor satisfaction involved...

The danger with sniping is that the seller may end the auction early and make a side deal with another buyer/bidder. They are not supposed to do this but I know it happens.

Oh well - I'd rather risk that, than getting shilled.

One could argue that lots of "douchebags" selling cars on Ebay place a silly reserve on them so the car won't sell and they can approach bidders privately afterwards. The bidders trying to flush out your reserve ar likely just determining whether or not you're one of those douchebags.

the reserve is there so i don't end up with my early S in an auction that isn't fetching it's moneys worth...

let's face it , i'm not putting it on ebay to give it away ...

the ebay rules are clear , you don't bid for the fun of it
you can only cancel bids under certain conditions, and that does not include sneak bids to find out where the reserve sits...

there's no advantage to contacting bidders seperately , the auction commision on ebay.nl is like 5bucks... maximum

RallyJon 10-17-2006 07:48 AM

Maybe they just want to avoid the angst of thinking you're winning an auction and then finding out there's a silly reserve?

I've been there--thought I won, then find out the seller has a reserve of twice market price.

Hard to criticize people for acting in their own best interest.

what angst? if you as a bidder meet the reserve, you will know about it, and if you don't meet it , you will also know about it

the auction will simply tell you "reserve not met"
which is a dead giveaway...

RallyJon 10-17-2006 08:02 AM

And if I can find out that reserve, and it's out of line, I won't waste my time bidding, checking the progress every day, etc. I don't like wasting my time (except on PPOT).

svandamme 10-17-2006 08:06 AM

bollocks, there's no waste of time
you put in your bid, you know instantly if you bid enough...

it's fire and forget, if you meet the reserve, you'll know, and then it's just a wait to see if somebody outbids you , no different then any other auction

and if the reserve is out of line, then you'll have to make that conclusion when you put your max bid, and get a no cigar result...
you do not have to go putting in fake bids to know that, if you're max bid is not enough , you should know enough
