I know there are a few out here on the west coast - there's a dealership up in the Santa Barbara area that has been rumored to have as many as four on display at the same time - all authentic.

They WERE illegal in the U.S. for many years (Porsche refused to give up two to the D.O.T. for crash testing, so D.O.T. refused to let them into the country). Eventually the official responsible for this "playing hardball" retired and immediately thereafter (due to pressure by Bill Gates, who'd had his 959 sitting on the dock for years) the ban was lifted. That's my understanding anyway.

So the point is yea, a 959 can be legally driven on U.S. roads now. Don't know about the "S" model and frankly I wouldn't. That thing belongs in a museum in some sort of stasis chamber.

Yeah, I know, this will show my age, but...

The 959 was the first Porsche I loved. I remember reading about it when I was a kid and it seemed like the perfect car.

There is a man named Bruce Canepa (i think) somewhere in the middle of the east coast (one of the Carolinas?) that has been importing and emissions-tuning 959s for a couple years now. The good news is that advances in tuning technology means that the cars now generate significantly more power while meeting stricter emissions regs.

Bruce Canepa is in Santa Cruz, as described. He has a brother, Mike, who does motorcycle stuff and lives in the Carolinas, IIRC.
