Truck Tires

Need new rubber for the Tahoe.

Thinking the Kumho ECSTA STX. Good overall rating and attractive pricepoint for the category.

Live in NY so need a good all weather tire.

Had Kumho's on my 3000GT and currently have them on the 911.

Pleased with them on those vehicles so far.

Thoughts, experiences on trucks?

love my bfg radial all-terrains...33.5/12.5/15.

Just get on Tire Rack and read the reviews and ratings. They've yet to lead me astray.

I have Bridgestone A/T revo on my Nissan X-terra. Fantastic tires, I highly recommend them. All terrain with deep pattern that grips well in wet and snow, very quiet on highway, low wear and good price.

I've had good luck out of my BFG AT's as well. Mostly road miles and they have had good wear so far. About 14K on them this year alone.

VINMAN 12-26-2006 08:12 AM

Both my trucks have Pirelli Scorpion A/T's on them. Best tire I have ever had on a vehicle

Other than that I'd go with the BFG AT also.

Tirerack was my 1st stop for reviews.

Just called my local tire guy, the Kumhos are on back order. He can only find 2.

Suggested the Falken st z04.

Can't find a direct comparison between the 2.

Might just wait for Kumhos to become available or order 4 from TireRack and see if my 911 shop will mount them.

I have the REVOs on my Jeep Cherokee and my BMW X5. I'm replacing the REVOs on the Jeep. They wore out in 3 years and only about 30,000 miles. They were much better than the Goodyear Wranglers they replaced.

I ordered new tires for the Jeep from Tire Rack.

I wanted these: Goodyear Frontera SilentArmor
But they were out of stock at the local warehouse.

I ended up purchasing these: Goodyear Forerta Tripletred

The Triple treads are rated higher in most respects, but they are slightly louder. I wanted the quieter tire.

Here is the comparison page:

Same tire and size as my wife's Jeep. Good tires.

You may wish to check out Sumitomo tires. Here is a link to their truck/SUV tires http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR+Sport+H% 2FP

I have not used the truck tires yet, but their HTR+ all season high performance tires have gotten excellent reviews from alot of people on TireRack. I recently put a set of the HTR+ on my wife's Audi and thus far they are great and they are supposed to last pretty long compared to other "cheap" tires.

TireRacks reviews are often pretty helpful if you read them all (not just the first couple that pop up on the first page).

Hmm, Goodyear Silent Armor. Pricey but overall rating looks like it warrants the extra bucks.

The Triple Tread is not available in the size I need. 18 inch rim on the Tahoe.

I look for a deal on a tire not really to save money but to make sure I get as much tire for the money as possible.

This is the wifes/kids ride. Being cheap with the most valuable things you have is not something I beleive in.

Will call around to see local availability.

Thanks for all the input from everyone.

Definitely do your homework, as others have stated here. Tire rack's site is a good resource, but like Tim said you have to read several reviews of each tire. Patterns will emerge, (pun intended). Some of the tires that posters on this thread are raving about have gotten horrible reviews overall from other buyers.

BFG ATs are a great truck tire, in all of the various treads they offer, but the are expensive, particularly the aggressive one:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=All-Terrain+T%2FA+KO

One of the most important things to determine is which tread you want, what is the breakdown of dry highway vs. mud/snow driving? Do you tow heavy? 99% of U.S. SUV drivers would be happiest w/ an OEM replacement-type tire, like the BFG Long Trail that came on Tahoes and Durangos, etc.

I researched the crap out of this issue and bought new Toyos for my big F-250 4x4, I wanted load range "E" tires w/ a medium aggressive snow pattern that are good on highway. I am fairly happy w/ them, but they wander a bit on the highway. Quiet enough. Not cheap, but less than BFG ATs. They make a good tire for your truck. Good luck, and do your research! :)

I own several trucks that get lots of miles on them and have tried a few different tires for various reasons. I always come back to Michelin LTX. I think they give the longest life, the best ride and least noise - right up till they are worn out.

+1 on the BFG Revos, I have them on my Tahoe, and other than a slight decrease in MPG, they are great in the snow and mud. Both of which the Tahoe sees, as it is our camper pulling mobile, and has been out a ton in the almost 3 feet of snow we just got.

The Revos always get good reviews on the 4Runner site I occasionally lurk on. We ended up getting a more highway oriented Bridgestone and have been very happy, far better than the crappy OE Dunlops.

I had Pirelli Scorpion A/T on an F150 a while back, great tires for the first 5k or so, then they got LOUD. Otherwise, the truck rode and handled noticable better, even as they got louder.

bigchillcar 12-26-2006 10:40 AM

this thread reminds me that i meant to rotate my bfg's at 2,500 miles. they're brand new and i want to keep these tires in damn good condition. i've got over 3,000 on 'em so i better get rotatin'.. ;)

red-beard 12-26-2006 11:01 AM

It is very important to know what your plans for the tires. My Jeep these days sees highway miles and little snow or off road conditions. So, I was heading towards a highway tire. The tires should arrive tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Costco Bridgestone 'commerical' tires, good for the sstreet; quiet, decent in the rain and the price was right.

OE Michelin LTX A/S lasted 84000 miles on the Dodge 2500. Decent ride considering it's a 7000 lb truck with 50 psi front/55 psi rear. They sure are expensive, but I will admit most Load Range E tires are not cheap. No off-road experience here. The freakishly heavy diesel engine and 2WD drivetrain do not lend to off-road prowess. ;)
