Porsche Power Kit Car?
ok this may be a far fetched idea, but here is my thoughts.
Just watched the GTM kit car video, $19k kit and all you need is a G50 tranny and LS1 engine to build a complete GTM kit car. (oh yeah and mechanical skills). What would this GTM car be like with a 993 powerplant and gearbox? I really do like the design of the GTM, how would a 993 engine look from the rear glass...the LS7 in to the demo model looks nice. ok I know this is on par with the V8 transplants into a 911...so bash away. :D |
Are you refering to these cars? http://www.gtmcars.com/index.php
Or is there another GTM? If its the former, its a kit car so what ever fits will do! A 993 flat 6 in a light weight fibre glass sports car is a pretty appealing idea. |
it's from factory V...so not the one you posted. I seen a link to it awhile back as a Pelican was building it...see if I can find it.

|
Now that makes more sense, the cars in the link I posted are a little on the small side. As far as kits go that looks rather tidy.
|
it's a very nice kit and as a company they have a good history. Just thought what it would be like in a mid engine kit car.
and I found another thread that talks about it, so I am not the only sicko http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=203745&perpage=40&highl ight=gtm%20kit%20car&pagenumber=2 |
Comparing a 993 engine to an LS-1 in a kit car ...............
The 993 engine will cost more. The 993 engine will have less horsepower. the 993 engine will have less torque. The 993 will weigh almost as much as the LS-1. Other than that it sounds like a really good idea ;) About the only things the 993 engine does better are sound and feel. As far as factory five having a good reputation, cough cough I don't think so. Maybe now they are great but as little as 7 or 8 years ago they built the pep boys or walmart of cobra kits. Biggest POS on the market. An entire chapter out of a Cobra book I have ("The Complete Guide to Cobra Replicas") was dedicated to explaining who the factory five cobra kit should not be purchased and why, specifically quality and safety. You could always call Cobra City in Orange and ask them what they think about factory five. they won't even let one on the lot. You see around that time I was very serious about building a cobra. My wife saw how much it was going to cost and said "why don't you get an old Porsche and fix it up like you used to do when you were younger" and the rest is history. |

But for the record, I think it would be a great idea...although with Chuck Beck recently entering the market with his 904 kit...I think the GTM is no longer the best option. |
Sammy, can you send me any links to quality issues with factory 5? I like the idea of the type 65 coupe and have been collecting a few parts to move in that direction. Maby like I should look a little closer. Thanks.

Sammy, I thought Cobra City in Orange went out of business. Or did they move from the lemon(?) street location.

I dunno, looks like a Mitsubishi 3000GT with a body kit. Proportions look a tad weird. Big beefy lower but the roof looks to small, ie it's been chopped.
I'd like to build one of these. http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/usa/ Scott |

I find the GTM very attractive, and would instead liken it to a GT40 rather then a 3000GT with a body kit. Sammyg2, never heard anything bad about FFR. They seem to have a well designed car that will kick performance wise. All Cobra's have bad aero though. FFR is on the third revision of their cobra kit, and I hadn't looked into their car's seriously until a year or two ago. So it may not have been as good with the MK1's, I know they have completely redone their body molds, and I don't know what else. |
Terv,
Chill dude. You'd think you designed it. Just gave my opinion, you don't have to like it, fine with me. I'd hardly call what I said bashing it. I owned a 3000 so obviously I like the style, just think it's off. But then there are people out there who like Aztecs so go figure. Happy New Year. |
still can't seem to find the thread where the guy was doing the beta test build of this car, I thought it was on Pelican.

My Dad bought and built a Cobra kit from Factory five last year(2006). I believe it was there lasted and upgraded kit. It went together very well and he really enjoys it. I want that 917:eek:

I've been thinking that a mid-engined SBC-powered car would be a great idea, I was even playing with the idea of building one myself one day...
|
I researched the FF Cobra for a buddy a couple of years back. People either praise them or mock them, there is no middle. They have a reputation in the industry for skimping on materials and quality but the owners generally seem happy. Best I could tell is that they produced a lot of product for the money, but it's definitely low end stuff.
The GTM may be a different story though. FWIW |
One issue with a 993 engine is that it is significantly wider than an SBC. I doubt the frame is made to accomodate both. (On the other hand, it's relatively easy to put an SBC in a Porche because it is so compact.)
