Girlfriend caught on red-light camera in my car, must I rat her out?
Hi all,
Just got a friendly letter from some company in Arizona "acting on behalf of the City of Loma Linda" with some truly horrible quality black and white photos of my girlfriend "running a red light" in my beater Honda Civic at an intersection. The form asks if I'm the one in the photo. If you check "no", then you "must" give the name, address, driver's license, phone number, etc. of the driver. Am I legally required to rat out my girlfriend? I did no crime, don't they need a formal summons to testify? I feel like just checking the "no" box and *forgetting* to fill out the rest. Will they really pursue this? Any advice for beating this thing? Ticket is over $300. I have fantasies of taking a friends pickup truck, taking the plates off, putting a ski mask on, have them drive with me in the bed at 3AM and spraying Wurth's undercoating over the lenses of those cameras (they're only ~15 feet high). They have them at EVERY major intersection in our town and they drive me NUTS!!! Everybody slams on their brakes and almost causes collisions as soon as they see a yellow light, and I swear they shortened the yellows when they installed those cameras. BIG BROTHER at his worst! Would never do this, but it feels better to share it.

Now, when you think about it, don´t you just recall that the car was missing for a couple of hours that day. Stolen for a joy ride and then returned.

Tell them the car was stolen that day. You failed to report the theft because the car was recovered in your neighborhood the same day. I hate this crap!

Pay the tickett, if not..fine will increase,warrant and suspension to follow.
If she's still your GF make her pay, they are charging the 'Car owner' who was driving is left up to him/her to work out/pay. Have a nice collection of these photos myself. Stuttgart had them everywhere, quality of pic was quite good. |

One question - how good is the sex?
personally I hate those things and for the most part they have been eliminated in my area due to legalities. Also in the area at least it was proven the caution lights where shorter at those intersections and the instances of rear end collisions went through the roof.

Ticket is no big deal, two points on my or her license is! Insurance over three years will cost an extra $3000. GEICO sponsors these cameras for this very reason. How can I be forced to testify against her without a summons? These things truly piss me off and I want to fight it and make it as difficult as possible for them. |

You could make her 'work it off' In Germany you knew they where everywhere, so few tried to run the yellow, or even worse the red. The mindset regarding traffic rules is different here. Me ,I would take the cameras and ( most )European drivers over the cell phone gabbing minivan set any day.

Yes rat her out. It is your driving record and your insurance that will likely increase for this moving violation unless you do. If she has any character she will support you in this. She's the one that ran the red light. This may be a good test.

Offer her the opportunity to pay the ticket; if she balks, rat her out.
Yes, the traffic camera system is asinine, yes it should be fought/thwarted at all reasonable opportunities. What should not happen here is that you perjure yourself or be punished for something that is not your fault. JP
