seems imprudent to dump crap into the oceans, seems imprudent to continue to dump pollution from coal fired generation plants into the air, seems imprudent to sit in your car in your garage with the doors closed. Might this all just be the wrong thing to do?

Its not hard to imagine a clean environment, clean air, and renewable energy. Why wouldn't we do the right things?

it might already be too late

We wouldn't we do the right things because powerful economic interests like the coal and oil companies might suffer a little - look at sammy's spirited yet inane comments for example. He is loyal to his corporate masters at Tesoro.

go gas - it is getting easier & cheaper to extract and makes a good near-term step in reducing all sorts of pollution if done correctly

Coal is the very worst thing to burn to make electricity in all sorts of pollutants. It's cheap tho - as long as you do not account for the health effects.

Heavy petro products like bunker fuel are probably next worst.
