Actually, I understand. She's not thinking of buying it. So.....this is not what it seems to some of you. She's not needing any more convincing. But.....she's so smitten with this car that she's still looking at the pictures and, with a heavy sigh, reminiscing about the lover that she did not get to taste.

That's probably the best way to sum it up. One part you didn't mention: the tears. Just like any relationship, it always ends in tears for me. Just writing this makes me want to cry...:(

You mentioned people saving barn finds - yes, but this car has non-matching engine, is not an S, and you are a student, not a millionaire car collector. :) So let it go, be glad you let it go, that car is not worth the tears to be honest. If it was a pre-A Speedster or a 67R, sure, but not for this.

I just bought my first Porsche last year, Looked good, when I got into it, it had bad rust issues, would never be able to hold an alignment, and had poor bodywork done. Now all the parts are pulled off the car, and going onto another tub. I'll have $8K more into the car I bought for $10K.
BUT... I'll now have exactly what I want.

I work with VW Karmann Ghias all day, and believe me I've seen alot worse that have been restored, and tons of money dumped into the car that they will never get their $$ back, but the difference is they have the money to do it, some of the cars were their parents, or their first car...it has sentimential value to them. The one your considering does not.

I always to to look at worst case if I parted the car out, can I get my $$ back, if no, then not a good buy. But I still spend countless hours trying to justify buying something I think I want! It's usually good friends/board members that help me take off the blinders!

Since that other car didn't have the correct matching numbers motor and will never be worth a bizillion dollars, how about buying a mechanically perfect bullet proof SC and painting it your favorite color? I bet a box of donuts that there is a Pelican who knows a good shop that can take a car down to bare metal and do the job right.

that car is a total piece of crap. Katie, the amount of money required to bring that thing up to snuff would buy you a decent 3.2 carrera or 911SC, fund your IRA for the next 5 years, and still have money left over for a daily driver, cool vintage Gibson guitar, or several vacations.

If you persist and buy it against the advice of all these folks who have been there and done that with greater budgets and other resources, than you deserve to be saddled with such a turd.
