Republican for 2008 - Fred Thompson

Interesting possible choice.

He is articulate. Conservative. An well known by a large section of the public, from his Movie and TV acting. He has that "Commander and Chief" look about him.

A very interesting choice.

lendaddy 03-12-2007 05:49 AM

I like what I've heard, but I haven't heard much.

wludavid 03-12-2007 07:16 AM

He's articulate, but is he clean? :)

It is an interesting choice. He seems likeable, and he's flown under the radar for the most part. But that might be because he hasn't taken any strong stances on issues. People only know him because of his acting, not his political career. That might be his greatest asset, however.

Of course, I'll always remember him for the worst line of dialogue in Die Hard 2 -- "Let's pack 'em, stack 'em and rack 'em. Move people!" Who says crap like that?

Ronald Reagan was not that well known politically either, until Ford's nomination party. Like Mr. Thompson, doubt he runs

Joeaksa 03-12-2007 08:09 AM

Would love to have someone who is from "outside" the DC beltway run for office. We need to clear out the deadwood that we have in DC right now and he would be an excellent start.

Thompson is the only real conservative who has a chance of winning. Newt has been shooting multiple rounds into his feet recently, so he's out.

legion 03-12-2007 09:02 AM

Does anyone have any news articles about this guy they can post?

I'd like to know where he stands on various issues.

Moses 03-12-2007 09:13 AM

Fred Thompson will be 67 year old at the time of the election.

He is a good friend of Scooter Libby.

He is an outspoken supporter of the war in Iraq.

He is unelectable, IMHO.

red-beard 03-12-2007 10:00 AM

But he's on CSI or one of those shows.

dd74 03-12-2007 10:10 AM

He was good in "Hunt for Red October." I think he was a senator before his film debut. I don't much about him these days. I guess I'll wait for the "Access Hollywood" interview.

Rick Lee 03-12-2007 10:16 AM

He was one of the House counsel during the Watergate hearings. He was a US senator from TN. I've met him several times. He has bad breath too. But he's a very likeable guy with an excellent tv presence and voice. He should do well if he's serious about it.

red-beard 03-12-2007 10:19 AM

They have mouthwash for that. Scraping your tongue with a spoon after brushing your teeth usually helps as well.

I really liked him in "Flight of the Intruder". Like I said, in most of his shows/movies, he has command presence. And he started doing the acting before leaving the senate. if I remember correctly, he also has a song writing career.

Poor Al. He is going to plotz.

He is well situated to win the South and the Mid-west. The guy could pull it off.

Sonic dB 03-12-2007 10:33 AM

He was pretty good as White House Chief of Staff Harry Sargent
playing opposite of Clint Eastwood's 'Frank Horrigan' in
"In the Line of Fire".

Superman 03-12-2007 10:37 AM

It's going to be a race for the bottom. I actually, honestly, expect both parties to put up a 'token' race for the White House, and then make as many serious mistakes as possible so as to avoid victory. 2012 will be the race to win. So much damage has been done to our country in these past six years (and upcoming 1.5) that it will take the next President more than four years to even begin to effect some meaningful repair. That job will be fully impossible for a Republican. Rejection and reversal of Dubya's policies and practices and decisions will be necessary, and even the Republicans know that. So, a Republican president would need to either disavow the Party Line, or take the blame for the mess........or both!

Neither party wants this next one.

techweenie 03-12-2007 10:39 AM

But has he ever played opposite a chimpanzee?

Turbo_pro 03-12-2007 11:24 AM

He was also in Days Of Thunder.
Nascar at it'd finest.

legion 03-12-2007 11:26 AM

Can someone post a picture of this guy? I have no idea who he is.

"The Russians don't take a dump without a plan, son."

The guy has great presence.
